Hello!!!
The preoccupation goes away slowly. I can now go all day without thinking of cigarettes- and if it weren't fpr this site, I don't think I could spontaneously tell you how many days it has been since my quit... The annoying thing, for me at least, was that I never had the feeling of "now I'm over it". I once had an "aha-effect" at the end of my second month when I realised that I hadn't thought about smoking all day.
The obsesive thoughts still haunt me from time to time, though. But it's nothing compared to those first weeks when I could not allow myself to be unoccupied for even 10 minutes...
Keep going!
