I am convinced the WORST thing

I'm the same. I'll browse for some symptoms on a site such as Allreferhealth, and I'll discover - and often, at one level, truly believe - that I've got thyroid problems, diabetes, a brain tumour and schizophrenia.

I just told my husband the very same thing just a few days ago! :) That's why I'm glad I found this site too!I decided to not look up any more any more info on medications. I am taking Zoloft. It is really helping me and I have not had one side effect, so I since I'm doing well I'm not going to do any digging for any more information. The only thing I'm going to look up on the internet from now on is sites dealing with stress reduction, etc.

I hate to laugh.. I'm not laughing AT you.. I'm laughing WITH you (and at myself!). I do the SAME thing. Not only do I diagnose myself with all these weird diseases, but anytime I am given a medication, I read up on it and give myself every side effect that is listed. I told my husband that if I read tylenol causes you to grow an extra foot, I would likely be shoe shopping. ha ha. I tend to be a little "obsessive" about things when I get interested into them. If I am on a health kick, I read non stop, if I am interested in a real life crime case-- I read and memorize every detail. Maybe it's part of our disorder.. I don't know but I find it amusing to know I am not alone.

I am guilty of this one too!! I have many time sypmtom surfed and always ended up with something horrible and boy did it get hard to calm myself down after that. So now I refuse to symptom surf and instead I come here and go to the anxiety symptom chart instead and remind myself that it is just my anxiety.

STOP SYMPTOM SURFING!!!! This is what everyone including my doctor tell me. It is the single worst thing you can do. First of all everything you read will have one foot in the grave. I learned this the hard way. Befor the internet you would have to dig up some stuff in a medical book and now that we have the world at our finger tips it makes it so much more simple to read about all the stuff that will kill you. For me symptoms surfing is part of my anxiety, it's a compulsion, I know I shouldn't do it but I sit for hours and read about all this horrible stuff. I have read that I had ovarian cancer, lung cancer, hodgkins lymphoma and most recently A stroke and or a Brain Tumor. Like my doctor once told me " The internet is a wonderful source of information but you can't belive everything you read" Most of the information isnt monitored so there is allot of false info out there.

"I was afraid to tell my husband that I was dying, I forced myself to go out, even though I KNEW that I was having a heart attack. I didn't go to the doctor for fear she would tell me that today would be my last day on earth" BAAA-HAAA!!!!! That is sooooo darn funny and sooooooooooooooooooooooooo TRUE!!!!!!!!!

Trust me, I am not laughing at you, but at myself. I've always said that if I read a medical dictionary, I could start with A and have at least one disease for every letter of the alphabet. I'm a reasonably intelligent, educated 53 year old woman who has done this periodically for years. Why did it take me this long to know that most of my maladies start with "A" for anxiety? In my case, the Internet was a good thing. I was searching for the cause (and of course, the worst possible scenario) of my symptoms. I was convinced I was having a heart attack, had a brain tumor, and a dozen other things when I came to this site on a whim. Bingo! I had suffered (alone) for years. I was afraid to tell my husband that I was dying, I forced myself to go out, even though I KNEW that I was having a heart attack. I didn't go to the doctor for fear she would tell me that today would be my last day on earth. Suddenly, the 'asthma' attacks a few years back that mysteriously disiappeared, the 'strokes' the 'heart attacks' and other maladies all made sense. I called my doctor for an appointment. I was certain that she would not like me to self diagnose, but I did take my self test results with me. She was elated. I wish I could say it was all smooth sailing from then on, but things are looking up. Although we have not eliminated the anxiety attacks, we are finding ways to deal with them and the depression that follows. You are not alone...and I understand you!

The worst thing we can do to make oursleves worse, is go do searches on the internet. My LAWD!! You go looking for answers and by the end of your 12 hours on the internet you have diagnosed yourself with at least a heart defect, possibly a blod clot, maybe lung cancer and if not those then it must be a tumor. Darn..I felt better before I read all that stuff!!!! No more internet searching for me. I will just come here, pull up a chair and stick around.
