Hi Islandgirl, My first posting on this site was also my public declaration. One of the most important things, to me, that I said was that I was not 'in the process of quitting' but 'that I am now a non-smoker'. And that's the way I've thought of my self self since Jan 14th. Whether it's part of the reason that I'm still hanging on going into day 11 or not I just wanted to share what got me this far. What ever your reason for quitting is a start. You may think you are quitting for your husband but one day when you realize you are breathing better, you smell better, your smile is brighter then you will be quitting for you. Quitting for someone else makes it harder, but it can be done. For me it had to turn into quitting for me and you will get there. You have been given sound advice. Use this site as much as you need to, we will be here. Island Girl, Hi and great to have you in with the January Quitters... I'm at the halfway point of Day 5 and I know how you feel. I am giving up for me first because of being very close to full-blown emphysema ( check that? How could I have been stupid enough to even get this far and still kept on smoking filthy cigarettes?) and then for my wife because I can't filthy-up her breathing space anymore and her tolerance for my crappy addiction has been extraordinary. Only 4 days and I don't cough as much, I think I can smell the steak burning in the pan, and my sitting room doesn't smell like a gigantic ashtray. So, congratulations on quitting and keep coming back here for support. Hi Islandgirl & Welcome! So glad you found us! After just a few days of nonsmoking you will see so many improvements to your life. So, ultimately, you will be quitting for yourself. It also sounds as if you have quite a bit on your plate right now and having all of the energy that you can muster up will be very important to YOU as well as your mother and husband. Quitting is one of the greatest gifts that you can give yourself and you will be soooooo glad that you did! Hang in there! Hi Island Girl As everyone else has said, use the program tools here - the glove box, the quit program workbook. They both help you identify triggers and coping strategies, as well as keep you busy ;) Ice water helps a lot. Since you know you smoke as a relaxation/reward thing, maybe you could plan a different one? A quick walk outside, 5 minutes doing a crossword or word find? a mini-facial? paint your fingernails? point being, do something nice for yourself instead of smoking. Hey Island Girl - I wouldn't worry too much about your motivation as you begin this journey. I think that quitting for someone you love is a great reason - just keep a check on yourself that you don't get bitter towards him because of it. I IS still YOUR decision - not his. As you go on, you'll find other reasons to quit - when you find them, write them down.. I think this is very very very important, because when strong urges hit or things get crazy - it's too easy to forget. You'll find tht this is a journey of self discovery and you're going to get the chance to meet a grown up version fo yourself that isn't altered by a chemical adiction - I think that's pretty exciting! It may be hard, and you may cry and you will laugh, and it can be a roller coaster ride, but an exciting ride non-the-less. Islandgirl, You found the perfect place to quit smoking! I don't know how I found this place either but it was just what I needed. Take one day at a time. Try not to look at the big picture and just keep taking really deep breaths. Quitting is something that is very difficult to do but once you do it, you feel so good about yourself! Drink plenty of icewater and work the program here. It really is one of a kind. Congratulations on your decision to quit. Hi Islandgirl, You are in a tough place in your life. It sounds to me like you know what you need to do you just don't know how yet. Smoking is an addiction. Addictions are hard to break. You are stronger than the addiction if you are prepared to fight. Work this site. use all the tools available and all the advice from the other members. Give back. tell us what is working (or not working) for you. ((hugs)) I will keep you in my thoughts and wish you the best. Your circumstances are not that different from how mine have been. I promise you will be much more help to yourself and everyone else once you discover you can quit. Remember, this is a learning process. You smoked along time and It is not going to go away without constantly reminding yourself that you don't want to smoke. It will get better quicker than you think and the rewards are so much better.
