Don't forget the hershey bars, kisses, morsels, whatever. As long as it says Hershey on the label, it is all good! Just ask Mercy. Go to the store and buy these. None of these will hurt you in any way and they will help get your blood sugar right. Every few hours make yourself a little plate of any combination of these: String cheese/babybel cheese rounds Raisins/Craisins Almonds Whole wheat crackers like Triscuits or Wheat Thins Cherries Grapes Pretzels Olives Carrots/celery Peanut butter Rusty :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/13/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1119 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 31,332 Amount Saved: $3,916.50 Life Gained: Days: 160 Hrs: 0 Mins: 39 Seconds: 49

tubbie, Your blood sugar is all over the board for awhile. Every cigarette overworked your pancrease to produce a surge of insulin you didn't need. Now that it is trying to find it's normal function you begin to crave carbs and sugars to keep your "old" chemistry up to it's former bad levels. It is o.k. to indulge a little....but much better to up your protein for energy and healing. Besides......if you eat too much sugar you may gain too much weight...... which many find discouraging and use as a reason/excuse to throw away their quit. Hope this helps Mercy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 350 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,000 Amount Saved: $1,564.50 Life Gained: Days: 46 Hrs: 8 Mins: 41 Seconds: 39

Eat - Don't let yourself get hungry. The shakes mean that your blood sugar has dropped too low and you nead to eat something. Smoking raises your insulin resistance, and quitting lowers it and everyone is more prone to low blood sugar - and more hungry. Eat higher protein low fat foods. Foods that weight alot are better too. For instance a handfull of grapes and a handfull of raisins have the same calories but the grapes weigh more and will fill you up more. You are doing fine. Since Anna is on a banana kick why don't you try the peanut butter on the tortilla and wrap a banana in it. It is good wholesome snack or lunch, breakfast or what ever. I read somewhere that hunger pain and craves feel the same. Maybe drink some water or juice and wait 10 minutes and if you still want a snack have one, just don't smoke. I've been "smoking" baby carrots, or popping grape tomatoes like crazy. When I went grocery shopping I made sure I bought only healthy foods so if I did want to eat, at least it would be good stuff. The other night I went through quite a few whole wheat tortillas with peanut butter. Perhaps the peanut butter wasn't great, but at least the tortillas were whole wheat. Good advice everyone! Use water, gum and even low calorie snacks to curb those craves! Josie, Health Educator

Hi tubbies, I am only two days ahead of you - hang in there! Aside from carrot sticks, what works for me is a bottle of water I carry everywhere and tic tacs (mints). Did you notice how much better everything tastes? Even vegetables and tomatoes taste heavenly. When hunger strikes, try a plate you would previously consider unsavory and maybe you will like it so much you won't go for the high-calorie stuff next time. Good luck! Hi Tina, I lived off of pretzel sticks and popcorn - both are pretty low in calories and pretty filling. Also, licorice is another good one to keep the mouth busy but only as a treat. I ate everything that wasn't bolted down those first two weeks. Don't forget, smoking was an appetite suppressant so additional hunger is to be expected. Almost 3 Days in, eah? Looking good!
