Scared To Fall A Seep?

20 years ago 0 6 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
For the past two weeks I've barely slept because I am so afraid of waking up to a panic attack since they're SO MUCH worse when they start in sleep (and complicated by asthma). What I find really helps me is to fall asleep with with dim lights on as well as with noise like the radio on and a book in my lap, I don't know why, but even though it takes me longer to fall asleep with the extra stimulus I'm less likely to wake up with a panic attack, or if I do, all the "normal daytime" stimulus helps me get out of it in a shorter period of time because I come to my senses faster. I don't know if this would work for you, but for me it somehow feels safer, or less final, to fall asleep in this manner. I hope it becomes manageable in any case.

My fear of falling asleep was fear of dying and worrying about what's beyond, if anything at all. If you're religious there should be no fear, but I assume that you're not. I've decided that if there's a soul then we can create our own spiritual existence [after mortal death] and populate it with who ever we want to. This answers the question: What if I die in my sleep? I've also found that keeping a pen & paper nearby is hugely useful - if you're afraid you're going to die if you fall asleep then write down "final" messages to whoever. Since I've done this, I'm not afraid of falling asleep anymore. May just work for you. :)

I too have had this problem with sleep........But mine wasn't about death or dieing alone........I didn't like being out of control....I felt at the time that going to sleep was another form of not being in control of my own body......Giving up my stress was out of the question.....Now when I look back. It seems so silly what I was thinking.......My body needs 7hrs of sleep a day to stay healthy and in control. I was fighting the only natural cure .....Ps. You can never make up for lost sleep.....Let go of the stress and go to bed......

You are not alone Sam. I have been there. It would be helpful if you noticed your anxious thoughts that you have about falling asleep. If you tell yourself that everything is ok and you are safe it will help. You can try recording your favorite show and watching episodes of it right before bedtime or even fall asleep as you watch tv. Or you can dream/fantasize about pleasant events as you are laying in bed. It takes time to desensitize yourself but it can be done. Sweet Dreams :)

Sam, I used to have a horrible time falling asleep out of fear. I was afraid of waking up to a panic attack. I went through a period of time that nearly every night I would wake up in horror with a rapid, strong heart rate, breathing issues, and all of the other lovely symptoms. I was afraid I was dieing also, I thought OMG how could I possibly live with my heart doing this. I was sure it was going to burst in my chest. I also got so bad a few times I hyperventilated. It will get better than that Sam. I really think that once you get the tests done and get the results back and you know for sure what you are dealing with you will be able to get a better handle on it. Good Luck.

Yeah, I am really scared of dying, so I am having trouble addressing it I guess! What did you do? Sam S

Hi Sam, Yes - I used to be afraid of falling asleep until I identified what I was actually afraid of. In my case I was afraid of dying in my sleep and being alone for eternity. What has helped [me] is identifying the root cause of the fear, address the [what if] question & answer it. You're not alone :)
