I think than panic attacks and ulcers are closely related. Since "Stress" has always been said to be a major cause and instigator of ulcers. A few years back I had a major problem with a dueodenal ulcer. I first found out when I went to the bathroom and passed a ton of blood. I ended up in the hospital for a few days on several I.V. 's of tagamet. To make a long story short, the problem eventually just vanished. It was there and causing me a ton of grief for awhile, and then it just was gone?? I was on different medications, which I think were **** and didn't do anything. I'm not even sure I had an ulcer in the first place, although that's what the stomache specialist said. *l*

Hey PJ, thanks for your note! Yesterday I ate something and I thew it back up and the last few days I have had this pressure in the back and front of my chest, it's freaky, have you had this too. How were you tested to see if it was an ulcer and what is a duodenal type? I burp like nuts and think it's something to do with that or something else... Thanks, Sam S Sam.Sel@Rogers.Com or MSN TOSam25@Hotmail.com

Sam, How long have you been having the panic and how long have you been having the digestive system problems? Maybe keep a diary if you are not and document the panic and the feelings of anxiety as well as any changes in your digestive system. I know that with me even severe anxiety without a panic attack will send my digestive tract into a bad place. This spring I lost quite a bit of weight as I have bad anxiety in the Tornado season and I couldn't eat and everything seemed to want to run right through me. I think if you keep close tabs on the symptoms you can get a better understanding of what is or is not going on. And it can be something you can take to your physician as documentation of your symptoms.

Interesting, that's what I wonder, but something is wrong for sure in there, and it's getting worse, but they keep saying to me that it's pysco samatic and blah blah all is okay, well my insides are not right and I was trying some stuff for ulcer and irratable bowl thing and nothing is working and could be making things worse for me. I also think about death and loved ones, etc, to much of late, and think there is something so wrong with me and they are missing it!

Stomach problems are very common with panic.....Ive been having nausea, constipation, etc....I know its panic and eventually this symptom goes away but panic doesnt always.....I have found metumucil helps, also excercise helps move everything around....In terms of death thoughts, yes, I have them constantly....not in a suicidal way but rather, would sometimes want to be dead than dealing with all this stuff BUT also afraid of dying/illness and esp having loved ones ill/dying.....I find that having a spiritual direction and comforting people around helps BUT I struggle with the whole illness/dying thing as well....most people I think are in denial and maybe thats the best way to be with this, esp since when we were kids we never thought about this type of stuff.....if we are going to get sick/die anyway, why spend our lives worried about something that we cant control.....enjoy what we have now...i know, easier said than done.

After a couple of months of having panic attacks with chest pains I asked my doctor to have me tested for acid reflux. One morning I was having severe chest pains and for some reason I decided to eat something. After I ate the pains went away so I thought Acid Reflux? Well, turned out I had a duodenal ulcer. (Oh, I had also lost 30 pounds in 6 months without trying.) It finally dawned on me that after I ate about 2 hours later I would have a "panic attack". My heart would start racing and I would start thinking I was dying. Now I am beginning to think that instead of having panic attacks maybe it was my ulcer flaring up. Long story short, after taking prevacid for 2 months for the ulcer, I don't have the racing heart after eating anymore. I feel 100% better. But, now I am confused Was I having panic attacks that caused the ulcer? or did the ulcer cause the panic attacks? I know I was having panic attacks, because I had a big one the other night but it didn't come out of nowhere it was a situational attack. I have been in counselling for my panic attacks and my counselor told me that I am definitely having panic attacks. I went through the fear of dying, and almost weekly I found something new physically wrong with me. I have been to the doctor monthly since last December with something new wrong. When it turns out all that was physically wrong was the ulcer and then I was having side effects from the Prevacid. But finally, I am beginning to see the light.

Hey Rebecca, Thanks for the note. That's what I thought about the stomach and digestive system, it makes sense. Yes, that is what I meant about death thoughts...I am seeing someone right now, a pycoloist and it just feels like I am getting worse and I am running myself down! I am sweating and feeling like I am sick! Sam S

TOSam, When the panic is bad I have all sorts of digestive disruption as well. This has gone on for days or even weeks at a time. I have had very bad nausea and diarrhea along with it. When you say "death thoughts" are you talking about worrying that you are going to die? Worrying that something's wrong with you? I do believe that there are quite a few people with panic attacks that experience that. Josie is right, talk to your Doctor or counselor about that. Do you have a counselor to talk to? It might help you. I wish you the very best!

Sam, Try talking to your doctor and pharmacist. Your medications may take a while to kick in. Talk about what you are feeling and what side effects are to be expected. Write down what you are feeling at all high momnets and submit it to your doctor. This will give an better overview for everyone. Hope this helps, Josie _____________________________ The Panic Center Support Team
