Depression Vs. Panic?

20 years ago 0 47 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I never thought I was depressed either until I started sedeing the doctors. Unfortunantley all the SSRI drugs that I have tried I can not tolerate so they have me taking depokate which is a mood stabilizer. I still have bits of anxiety here and there but much much better and today I went back to work for 4 hours. THAT was a big step. They say that the depression comes first cause that is what causes the ansiety and than by fighting the anxiety you just get even more depressed. Like I said....I NEVER thought I was depressed. I think that our bodies just get used to taking the medications and that is why we need a change... kind of like when you get stuck on a plateau when you are dieting and you can't loose anymore weight. You change your diet and than you start to loose again.

I have been on Lexapro for a couple of years now and it helps my mood a great deal. I have also been on Buspar for a long time but I don't feel it is working anymore. In fact, my psychiatrist is changing the Buspar and is considering putting me on Xanax that has a time-release along with keeping Lexapro. I have several friends on Lexapro and they agree as well that it is helpful. I agree that depression and anxiety go hand in hand. I get depressed because I get frustrated with the anxiety and panic. I get tired of fighting it sometimes and I get depressed. I tell myself to hang in there and it will get better but sometimes it is difficult to see that it is getting better. I don't know if anyone else has felt this way but sometimes I think it's scary when a certain medication stops working. Does that mean I am getting so bad that the medication won't work anymore? Just a thought I needed to get out.

What can you tell me about LEXAPRO?

I took Prozac for 7 years and it controls anxiety pretty well but at times I have to take Xannax also for the doozies. It really helps depression and helps me think clearer. I just went back on it 3 weeks ago and cant wait to feel semi-normal again. I am anxious all the time lately. Hope that helps, Cj

I think they are like the ugly step sisters. Where you find one, there is usually the other hanging around. I did not even realize I was depressed until I started taking the Lexapro for panic and anxiety. After awhile I noticed how much better things in my life looked, felt and my emotions were finally in balance!

Ive done well on prozac but at low doses - ie 5-10 mg daily....it really worked when i first came down with this illness and several relapses over the last 14 years but this go round its mildly effective. I also take .25 mg klonopin... I probably should up my dosage but havent been able to ....also, prozac stays in your system longer and doesnt have same withdrawal effects of shorter acting ssris.....Keep us posted.

Hi everyone! Was away from the board a few days as I was seeing a psychiatrist out of town and ended up at my sister's place for a few days. Anyway, the psychiatrist I found is a lovely woman and I am delighted with her. But I am also a bit confused. She agreed that I have GAD with panic but felt that right now I am more depressed than anxious. How do drs. determine that exactly? And what came first? I know I have been tired, insomina, weepy, etc. lately but I just thought that was a symptom of the constant struggle with anxiety? She prescribed Prozac for the anxiety, Klonipin for my sleep issues, and Xanax in case I have a strong attack. Does anyone have a positive story on Prozac? And, alternatively, I have read alot about side effects on the other SSRI's, does this one have them as well? I mean aside from the sexual side effects which I had to laugh about, WHO CARES?!?! When you feel this bad how can you think about sex?!?! LOL, Rachele
