Am I agoraphobic?

20 years ago 0 2 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
I don't fear going out. I just don't want to go anywhere. I guess it is the "comfort of home" and avoidance of having to talk to anyone. My doctor said its major depression/anxiety and put me on Effexor 225 mg per day and Klonopin as needed. I don't usually need the Klonopin very often. I am feeling much better since the previous post. I started seeing a counselor and she's setting goals for me to make an effort to get out more. I appreciate your kind reply and support.

Hello BamaKathy, sorry to hear that you are currently suffering.I'm no doctor, but have had anxiety disorder for a number of years, and wonder if you have seen your doctor and if so, has he/she given you a diagnosis/medication? From personal experience you sound as if you are experiencing avoidance behaviours which are common amongst depression which sometimes makes it hard to even get out of bed and face the day.You can have agoraphobia without panic attacks, but it is usually a panic attack that can start agoraphobia,do you feel afraid of going out, or do you just not want to?I think if you feel fear about going out it could be agoraphobia,if you just can't face going out it could be depression.Either way as i've said i'm no doctor, but I would recommend seeing one, as avoidance behaviours can become habit forming( like retreating to the comfort of home).I hope this has helped in some way ,there are alot of very helpful and empathetic people on this site, so don't feel you have to struggle alone.Keep me posted with how your getting on, believe me, myself and nearly everyone on this site know what your'e going through. Good luck....Neil.

I quit my job in July because of the stress. I have had bouts of depression during my life, some worse than others. Since leaving my job, I find I am increasingly isolating except from immediate family. I don't answer the phone, go out, answer the door, etc. My husband is running most of our errands. I don't have panic attacks, but when I do have to go out, I feel like I'm "going through play-acting at being normal" and then when I'm back home, I'm totally exhausted. I don't know if this is agoraphobia, but I know I'd rather be inside my house than anywhere around people. I welcome your comments.
