Thanks a lot Chanda, I feel much better. I know I have nothing to worry about because I had only two attacs a year ago, but I want to be sure. I will talk with my doctor. If you have anything news about this, please let me Know. Dimi

Hi Dimi, I have heard that it could go either way. Lots of women say they only have panic when they are pregnant & others say their panic stops completely when pregnant. I have been researching on this topic & getting info from this site as well & I'm starting to think that it is safe to take medications for this while pregnant. I will talk to a dr beforehand to get an opinion but I think you should be able to take meds during pregnancy if needed. I hope this helps!! Chanda

Hello, I had two panic attacks one year ago. For this I asked help and I took medication for four months. I did not have any other attacks, since the two one year ago. But now, I am planning to have a new baby I am afraid for the nine months of the pregancy. I wonder if there is a possibility to have any other attacs for these nine months. If it is so what can I do? Thanks a lot Dimi

Hi, I worked as an administrator to two different midwifery practices for over seven years. You may want to consider midwifery care, not just because of the option of home birth, but due to the much more personal, sensitive care they can provide. Also, for your concerns regarding medication you can go to the motherisk site of the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. This site provides the latest research evidence on the safety of medication while pregnant or nursing. http://www.motherisk.org/main.php3 I have seven children, three of whom I gave birth to. My oldest is 23 and my youngest is now 4. An eight year gap won't cause too much trouble; in a way, the older ones are more help than trying to handle two little ones at the same time. Good Luck! Hi Chanda, This is a very common disorder and yes some women do need medication others get by with support and counselling - again it is different for everyone and the choice of medication is up to your doctor. Regarding your fears about being in the hospital - I think what I mentioned before would really help you. Being prepared and having all the key supports already in place would really help you once the time came around. The maternity unit may have it's own social worker that you could meet with (also well in advance) to help you prepare for the big day i.e. maybe a tour of the unit in advance would be helpful. Thanks Casey for the reply. So you see pregnant women with panic disorder/agoraphobia? I know every pregnancy is different but do some of them take meds? Also do any of them have attacks while in the hospital? I am nervous about not only the elevator but being off the ground floor (the whole fast escape route, I guess)do you see this same thing? Thanks again, Chanda

Hi Chanda, I currently work in maternity and I can tell you that we see women like yourself all the time. Although every woman and every pregnancy is different, and it is ultimately the doctor who decides which meds are appropriate or not. I think the key is to be as prepared and as informed as possible. Check with your doctor, public health dept, or local hospitals, about support programs for new moms. Many hospitals have programs in place that will follow and support you throughout your pregnancy and into the first year or two postpartum. Hi everybody, I just have a question & was hoping for some feedback. I was wondering if anyone has any info on pregnancy with anxiety/panic? I haven't really talked with my dr about it, but I did mention it once & he said that the goal should be a med-free pregnancy. (I agree) I have 1 child(8 yrs old) but I am scared to get pregnant now that I have panic disorder. I am afraid that I will need to go back on meds or have attacks & I wont be able to take Xanax. Not to mention guess what is scaring me about it??? No not the labor, the thought of having to go in an elevator. I haven't been in an elevator in over a year. I keep telling myself that I need to get over this panic thing first but on the other hand my daughter is 8 years old & that age gap is just getting bigger. I have almost descided that I was only meant to have 1 child, but then every time I accept that I think well it's not too late maybe I should have 1 more. I have read that some women when pregnant dont have any attacks at all while others have an increase in attacks & anxiety. I have also read that some women have taken Zoloft during pregnancy & even Xanax in extreme cases with no harm to the baby. I am just curious to others thoughts & experiences on this. I would appreciate any feedback! Thanks, Chanda
