Deep Breathing Suggestions?

19 years ago 0 41 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Ely Bay has an excellent CD called "Let Go" that has both a deep breathing exercise component and a muscle relaxing technique. I think you can get it on cassette as well. He gives very detailed instructions on how to breath deep into your belly. I hope this helps.

Hi, Just an FYI for everyone in regards to hyperventilating. I was taken to the E.R. yesterday for hyperventilating and the E.R. doctor was excellent in his approach to the situation. He actually took the time to sit down and try to "work through" it with me. He explained that trying to "deep breathe" to slow down the hyperventilation was the exact opposite of what I should be doing. He even suggested that I try the panting technique commonly used in Lamaze classes for childbirth! My hyperventilation was so bad that my arms and feet became atrophied (turned inwards-extremely painful). He told me to hold my breath and then slowly let it out to a count of 5 if possible and then pant for a few seconds and start over again. He also suggested that I never shut my eyes while this was happening and to stay focused on him. Within 10 minutes of doing this I felt significantly better.....after conquering the hyperventilation without medication, he then gave me a xanax (thank god) which relaxed me. I had never heard of this approach before but it really does work! kathy :)

Hi again Chanda I read your success post congrats!! Just to let you know that when I first started the deep breathing excercizes, I had alot of trouble with it. I would hyperventilate (spelling?)and get dizzy. It didn't matter what I did I felt like I still wasn't getting enough air. I started practising for 10 min a day 2 times a day and I really started seeing results. I still keep doing it and it really does help! One book that has a section on the breathing is Edmund.J. Bourne Panic and anxiety workbook. But if you try what I did I'm sure it will work for you!! Let me know

Hi Chanda, Learning how to do deep breathing exercises is very important. Not only does it keep your blood well-oxygenated, it helps to clear your thinking too, thereby reducing stress. Surprisingly, many of us have a hard time doing breathing exercies correctly and do not fill thier lungs to their full capacity. It does however get easier with practice. -you can sit, lie or stand, keep your back straight -keep one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen -visualize your lungs filling with air as you inhale, you should feel your shoulders move up as your chest rises and fills with air -exhale through your mouth by blowing gently -remember to keep your facial muscles relaxed Everyone is an individual and as such may need to vary the duration and frequency of this technique. Keep us posted with your progress, we look forward to hearing from you soon. Casey _____________________________ The Panic Center Support Team Reference: C. Ren Kneisl, Psychiatric Nursing.

Hi all, As I've said in previous posts I have a hard time with deep breathing exercises. I seem to be a shallow breather & I can't seem to breath deep like I should. Does anyone have any suggestions on this? Any books, videos, practices, etc.?? I have been trying to find a video on beginners yoga for breathing techniques & such. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks so much, Chanda
