Xanax Vs. Klonopin

20 years ago 0 33 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hi everyone, Just wanted to say thanks for the information about xanax vs. klonipin. The doctor took me off xanax and put me on klonipin starting today and I was/am extremely nervous about starting a new medication and what it might do to me (I had an allergic reaction to luvox last week which landed me in the E.R.) but your descriptive comparisons help alleviate at least some of my fear of trying klonipin. Thanks again! kathy

I have been taking Klonopin (generic) for about eight months (1/2 of .5 at bedtime) which is very little. In the morning, I notice that I am a little wobbly and lightheaded sometimes. Also, I feel off balance sometimes. I wonder if anyone has had that side effect. Since I am a very slim person, maybe I am more sensitive to medications. I tried taking Paxil for three days and felt horrible so I discontinued it.

thank you mike for your info. i was quite happy taking klonopin for the couple months i was on it. i havent had any for 3 months and missed it greatly but i wasnt addicted otherwise i would have went to a dr sooner to get a refill ;) i took my first 1mg xanax last night b4 bed. didnt really notice anything but i did sleep well without taking tylenol pms which ive had to do for years so maybe it helped. im nervous about all the xanax posts. klonopin worked great for me as like u, id take 1 b4 bed and sleep well and felt calmer all the next day and would only take another if i was going out somewhere that i knew would make me anxious. im gonna go back to my dr and ask for the klonopin. it worked great and gave me no problems and stopping cold turkey didnt effect me either.

This is based on much reading and personal experience, I am not a physician nor do I play one on TV. :) Xanax is short lived but powerful. It is also very addictive and once you have been on it for a period of time it is very difficult to stop. I have read that withdrawal can sometimes take up to a year for those on highr doses. The withdrawal symptoms are worse than the ailment you began taking it for. It is a lifesaver during intense anxiety attacks. It will remove the symptoms usually in 20 minutes or less. Klonopin has a longer 1/2 life (longer effect) and is (in theory) easier to withdrawal from because of that reason. It seems to me to be more mellow and not as potent as Xanax. Both are available in generic form so they are cheap as all get out. Xanax would make me somewhat "loopy" and "silly". It did help me sleep but I would wake with headaches (sometimes severe). After several years of Xanax (at low dosage) I decided to quit cold turkey....not a good idea. After several days I found myself in the doctors office looking for relief and a method to get off Xanax. The Xanax withdrawal symptoms were horrible...insomnia, irritable bowel, increased anxiety, irritability, headaches and jitters. I discussed switching to Klonopin as a "transition" medication so I could stop the Xanax and then reduce the Klonopin gradually until I was finally benzo free. The doctor agreed that was the best method. It is a method that is suggested by many "benzo-buster" websites. I understand it is much easier to stop Klonopin than Xanax, mostly due to the half-life of each drug. The Klonopin helps me sleep just as well as the Xanax but I dont have headaches in the morning and the Klonopin lasts longer so I dont wake up as anxious as before. It also doesnt make me feel "loopy" like the Xanax did. On the down side, it isnt as fast acting for me so I dont use it as a "stop this now" medication. I will start 1/2 doses (tapering down) of the Klonopin Monday. I hope this info helped. PLEASE discuss this with your physician. Mike

i used to take klonopin and it worked great. i asked my current dr for it and he decided to give me xanax instead. so im hoping it works similarly. i took the klonopin b4 bed usually and it helped me sleep great and got rid of my racing thoughts and allowed me to sleep without thinking about a million things.

T~ I have taken Xanax in the past on an as needed basis for about 9 months. I then was switched to Ativan due to short-term memory problems (which is a major hassle as I am a student). However, Ativan has been worse. Both medications were taken in very low dose range. I am now going to start Klonopin next week although the doc has warned me of possible memory problems. I just thought you should be aware of this possible side-effect of the benzos. The pro for Klonopin is that it is much longer acting than the others. I am hoping that this will result in less side effects and a better memory...now where did I put those car keys. ;) Mara
