In the end though, the trick is to not think about breathing. For most people, as soon as you actually stop thinking about it, your breathing will return to normal. Its very hard to let go, sometimes keeping busy can help. Anxiety about it only makes it worse. For many people, relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga and deep relaxation work well. It can take some work to even get into the state where you can accept and learn these techniques; many people require prescription medication, therapy etc. Without knowing where you are it its hard to say what you need to do, but this info may help.

I agree with Nina and Rhonnie...the deep breathing and counting breaths technique does work. I suffered from this for the longest and tried meditative deep breathing and it brought much needed relief. Rose

Hi Nina's right about the deep breathing but you have to do it every day 2 times a day for 10 min. to get the lasting effects. This was one of my worst symptoms I swore I had lung cancer or some other serious disease!! Keep doing the breathing everyday and after about 2 weeks you'll totally notice the difference

Let me just say that I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN !!!!! I frequently find myself in this very situation. Just the other day at my son's musical I found myself in the audience listening to my breathing rather than what was going on. In and out in and out I had to make myself breath ... yuck, even reliving it now I am starting to go on manual. I wish I had the cure but only finding something to do that can take my mind off of it seems to help me. Well, that's not entirely true, I am finding that deep breathing (8 counts in and 8 counts out)has help me a lot lately. I don't know if it's actually the breathing excercise or if it's that I am concentrating on the excercise so much I get distracted and move on but either way it works. Thanks for posting this I will be interested to see the replies you get. You are definately not alone and it is nice to know I am not either. Thanks again, Nina5

For the past week I have had some kind of difficulty breathing. Instead of me breathing subconsciously, I am doing it manually all the time, and it feels really bad. I know its mental because when I occupy my mind doing something it goes away and I breath, without me knowing it. But when I am not doing anything it seems that I am just concentrated on my breathing, and cant think of anything else. I pass the whole day like this, and unless I am doing something, I am going thru a living HELL. I really hope that someone can help me out, because I just dont know what else to do, usally when im getting this sensation i get really anxious and am constantly wondering if itll eventually go away HELP!!
