Need A New Reward

mrsd, I have found that anything that gets my mind off of problems (including the constant thinking about not smoking in the beginning is good.) If it is a hard evening with lots of time to get through a movie is a great escape. Your mind gets a breather for a whole two hours. If it is a short break, then something is needed to rest the mind for a shorter period. Now.. please don't laugh ;p....but I bought a few of those celebrity magazines. I'm not real big on whether Brad Pitt and Angelina are gonna make it or not...but I would make a cup of tea or coffee....and read a few pages of the gossip magazines... LOL IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM. I would get so intrigued with the celebrity gossip that for the 10 minutes of reading about Jennifer Aniston I relaxed and rested my brain. Besides.. it is "light" reading... not heavy or sad. For me also...especially when I got up in the morning and got home from work in the afternoon...would read my bible or bible devotionals. MRSD In the early days of my quit I used to go into my bedroom (the room farthest away from the garage where I smoked), then I would time myself for 4 minutes (the average time it took me to smoke one) and did deep breathing (nothing fancy just closed my eyes and breathed in through my nose and slowly out of my mouth). This gave me that quick "time out" that we all need sometimes- and it really worked. Good luck! You're doing great! Crossword puzzles - they take a lot of mental brain power, so you don't really think about smoking while you're doing them. Play a video game or something that only takes a few minutes. Read an interesting article in a magazine or newspaper. Or my favorite, do nothing. Now, I know at first, this can be very difficult to do because when you're not doing anything is when you really want to smoke the most, but honestly, this became one of my favorite "break" rewards. Just an opportunity to do absolutely nothing for a while. How wonderful does that sound sometimes? When I smoked, I NEVER just sat and did nothing... I was always smoking on my breaks. So doing nothing became a treat that I'd never really enjoyed before. Hope all this helps. Congrats on 16 days!!! Crave the Quit! Smoking does not give you a time out,it takes your lifetime away from you. There are lots of things you can do that would waste a couple of min.Dont mean to be so dry ,but smoking is not a getaway.Reward yourself with something positive, you deserve it.

Hi mrsd - How about a brisk walk, maybe while listening to some of your favourite music? I do that a lot. I take along some water, walk briskly taking in some fresh air and listening to music - find it all very pleasurable :) And it's a great stress reliever too ! I see you quit in April.. check out the thread 'April quitters" it's a great place to be :) J xo My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/4/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 20 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 511 Amount Saved: $205 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 7 Mins: 14 Seconds: 51
