Changing, You've received some great responses from your fellow quitters. Do what you can to avoid excess calorie intake and start putting some fun into your quit with pleasurable activities that get you moving. Hate the gym? Take a dance class, walk around your town/city, join a sports team, whatever interests you. You can start this process now if you want by slowly introducing more physical activity into your daily routines. Ex: Instead of taking the elevator, take the stairs. Walk when you can and go out when you can instead of sitting on the couch. See this as an opportunity to experience try new things and get out there to have some fun! As for your boyfriend, well, just remind him that it is temporary and that as members have said, your quit has to come first. For the constipation, more fiber and water.(Don't forget the water because fiber alone will constipate you more.) Physical activity will also help that gut get moving. If that doesn't help, consult your doctor or pharmacist. You may just need a little extra help until your body adjusts. Keep persevering! Danielle _____________________ The SSC Support Team

Hi Changing - I totally avoided the weight gain section of this forum for the first 3 months...There is absolutely no way that I could concentrate on both. I remember being so depressed in December when I realized that I had already gone up one size and I was starting to outgrow it. The good thing is that exercise has always been part of my quit. It replaced cigarettes as my coping mechanism to deal with stress, depression, anxiety, etc. Also, after 100 days, I was ready to tackle the weight issue. I'm still working on the diet part but I am loving the fact that I am soooooooooooooooo much fitter. I can run for an hour now...when I smoked I could barely run 5 mins. So now, 6 months later, the weight gain is gone and I am working on getting in better shape. The beginning of the quit was really rough for me....there is no way that I could do both at once. I agree...your quit comes first...the weight will come later... I support angelcapps comment. I have packed 15 pounds on in the past 50 days. I didnt realize anyone could gain weight so fast. Even though it disturbed me to gain weight I knew I couldnt handle weight control along with quitting. I started a diet this week and will work on loosing and getting back in shape now. Cant say that allowing yourself to balloon up is the best answer, but you should always have realistic goals First-stop smoking Second loose weight Third what ever other side effect I have from dieting? Hi Changing, Remember, what you are doing is for you not your boyfriend. Love surpasses a little temporary weight gain. Take care of your quit, then take care of the weight thing. It will be easier later, I'll bet. 1. The constipation is normal, a VERY common side effect of smoking. When you are not letting anything out of your body you are pretty much guaranteed to weigh more. Take some metamucil and eat a grapefruit, for me that is all it took. 2. Stress can cause weight gain. Stop stressing about getting fat and do something about it. Go for a swim, or a walk- it will make you forget about obsessing about the weight you have gained and enjoy yourself which will help solidify your quit. 3. The average weight gain for a smoker is 10 pounds- not smoking lets your blood flow at a healthy pace rather than through constricted blood vessles, thus slowing dowm your metabolism (for a heavy smoker by 200 calories per day) The way to offset this is to eat 200 calories a day less or burn them off excersizing. 4. Look really closely at your daily routine. Are you paying attention to your calorie intake? is it around 1700-2000? And are you trying to get at least 30 mins of moderate excersize 5 days a week? 5. Your boyfriend should not make you feel bad about your weight. He should make you feel good about your quit!! 6. Quit comes 1st - you are doing WONDERFULLY!!! Changing, You need to deal with one thing at a time. First the quit, then the weight. Some of us are strong enough to do both, I am not one of them. I have gained some weight, and now I feel I am strong enough in my quit to start to address the weight issue. I ordered a Pilates Ring and video and I will start to walk outside now that it is nice. Just tell your boyfriend that you need to deal with this your way and if that means one thing at a time, then so be it. You may want to substitute vegies for some of the nicotine substitutes. Sugarless candy may be the way to go to. Your body's metabolism changes when you quit and they say is levels out after a period of time. I had the bowel problems at first too. It drove me crazy, I felt blotted and huge and went back and forth with the constipation and so forth. Right now at 29 days quit, I think that part has passed for me. Thank Goodness!!!! Hang in there, it does get better and with each milestone you will feel better about you! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 28 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 713 Amount Saved: $140 Life Gained: Days: 3 Hrs: 0 Mins: 28 Seconds: 40

I wrote part of this in another post and have decided to re-post it in this forum and add to it. After writing & re-reading this, I realize that I'm not as okay with this as I said I was. I have gained quite a lot since I quit - I don't know how much because I'm too scared to step on the scale. I'm ashamed of how I look and fell extremely self-conscious. I had lost a bunch of weight over the past year, now I feel bigger than I did before that. I do think a lot of it is bloating/water retention, and plan to talk to my doctor about it. (And, it doesn't help that I've been constipated for the past 34 days!) Now here's the kicker... Before I quit, my boyfriend told me that he had 2 "concerns" about me...concerns that were effecting how he felt about me/our future. #1 was my smoking and #2 was my weight. Now explain to me how I'm suppose to quit smoking and lose weight at the same time!!! He's been very supportive in my quit and hasn't mentioned anything about my ballooning weight...I can only imagine what he thinks! So, as you can see, the whole issue of smoking & gaining weight is very significant & difficult for me. But, despite how disgusted I feel about my body right now, I'm going to keep fighting the nicodemon and will not smoke! I believe that once my body gets used to being smoke-free and totally stabilizes, I WILL lose the weight I've gained. I once read in a post - it's better to live in a moo-moo than die in a bikini! I know that I'm not going to smoke, but this whole weight thing is really taking a toll on me (I was going to say "weighing on me";)). I think that I've justified my expansionto myself by writing it off as bloating. However, I noticed today for the first time that it's not just my tummy, face, & fingers that are "swollen" - my thighs are bigger too. I don't think "bloating" could cause that. So, the realization is truly starting to sink in...I haven't just gotten bloated, I've gotten really fat. I honestly think I've gained 20 lbs in 33 days! The addict in me says there's a simple fix....start smoking and the bloating, constipation, and fat will all go away. I know this is a junkie thought. I know I can't and won't smoke. But this is really really really hard
