pregnant smoker

You know you should stop . And you know why you should stop. So there is no sense me telling you over and over again the dangers of smoking during the pregnancy. But here's a truth for you. I smoked while I was pregnant with both my children. I was too young (with the 1st), stupid, and just unable to stop. Luckily my oldest was born healthy as can be, underweight (5lbs14ozs) but healthy. My youngest daughter was not as lucky. Knowing this may have been my fault. She was 2 months early and weighed only 3lbs14ozs. We spent 1 week with her in the NICU of St. Josephs hospital in Ontario, then 3 more weeks in Niagara General's NICU. Her 1st picture, complete with incubator and tubes coming from everywhere, came 20 minutes after her birth with the warning that she may be dead before I get the chance to see her, not just this stupid picture. Then came watching the doctors and nurses feed her through a tube and not being able to hold her without a heart and oxygen monitor trailing behind, we didn't hear a good cry from her until she was about 6 weeks old. And we were lucky. Thank God she is a happy and healthy 5 year old now. Afterwords, I was assured that smoking was not the cause, but that doesn't really help much. It may not have caused the condition (placenta previa) but had I been a non-smoker, she would have been larger and more capable of handling the extra stress. I live everyday of my life with the knowledge that if I had quit, she may have been born without all that difficulty. On top of all that, I almost died and left my hubby a widow, alone with 2 kids. Please, just do everything you can to keep this baby healthy, and give him or her the best possible start to life he or she can have. I hope in some way, my story will help. billie 1979, You can do this. Just think of the wonderful life you and your child have ahead of yourself. I stopped smoking while carrying my three children... but I put myself though hell by just stopping and not really making my mind up to quit for good. My youngest child is now 19 and over 6ft tall and I only became a non-smoker 51 days ago. It is hard to do, but it must be done. Don't wait and live with the quit like I did. How? One suggestion would be to get Allen Carr's book, it may sound silly but it helps you understand the addition. He calls it the Easy way to quit smoking. It may not be easy, but it really helps. You mostly likely cannot use chantix since you are pregnant (you could check with your dr). It is a mind game after the first few days. A strong and positive outlook helps the most, just do not feel sorry for your self or the monster will win. Water, reading and exercise helped the most for me. We are all here to support you, you are doing a great thing for yourself, your baby and everyone in your life. Think of it as practice for labor pains and the great reward you will get of a healthy life without smoking. You can do this! Cigarettes Not Smoked

having had kids in the last 3 years, and going through issues during my wifes pregnancy that required specialst neonatologists(sp) - fortunately everything turned out well, and my wife has never touched a cigarette in her life. What Im saying is when you get to the time when you see the embryo and then the baby in the womb through ultrasounds, and realize just how many things can go wrong just in the normal course of pregnancy, you would not want to do anything that would make this process more complicated. Let me ask you this way? Would you take a new born 1 month old baby and exhale smoke straight into her/his face. What you are doing now is worse. if my post comes across harsh, I apologize - but damaging ones own health is one thing, - damaging a helpless, defenseless one is another. Do the right thing - I know you can do it My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/2/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 79 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,585 Amount Saved: $288.35 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 13 Mins: 18 Seconds: 31

Dear Billie, You have to do this? Then why don't you just DO it? Is the addiction more important than the health of you baby? Don't you know how bad smoking is for an unborn child? I bet you do. Don't light up one more cigaret if you care about your child. I'm sorry for writing like this but you should know better than smoking while you are 25 weeks pregnant. Just look deep inside yourself and then quit. Good luck.
