Can't go over the bridge

Lucy I'm sorry to hear about you losing your job! You know, just recently I posted a message about my inability to drive fearlessly at one specific place on my way home in the afternoons. I can so relate to what you're saying about the bridge. That one shortcoming makes you forget about the other wonderful accomplishments you've achieved. We should not allow this. The fact that we have the courage to keep on trying alone calls for an applause. I, too, am embarrassed about my panic disorder - at times I go into a complete state of denial, because I so badly want to be normal again. On the days that I just accept it, it is so much better to deal with. I sometimes tell people about the panic attacks, but I don't think they really understand. My aunt, who is extremely agarophobic, once said to me that she sometimes wishes that it was a broken leg or so, because the judgement and prejudice from the ignorant would then not be as bad. It would then be soemthing physical that the entire world would understand! Because my panic particluarly surface when I drive on the highway, I get all nervous at work when there is just the mere thought of me having to attend a meeting outside which would involve me having to drive on the highway. On a more positive note, though, I'm doing the panic program and it helped a big deal. Since I started the programme things have changed - for the better - significantly. I'm praying for you and I know you'll overcome this victoriously!

I think I just lost my job anyway. I haven't seen any of my friends for ages and ages and I don't even know if I want them to see me because of my problems. I'm so embarrassed by what has happened to me. Thanks for asking questions though. I wish I could just kind of - be left alone, but without financial worries. Thanks anyway.

Can you identify what it is about the bridge that terrifies you? which of all your options causes the least stress?

Bridges are a tough one to conquer. Have you thought of possibly doing a shift change at work, or to ride with someone you know at work?

By the way, I am really familiar with the ideas of exposure therapy, CBT, relaxation methods, etc etc. That's what I've used to basically cure myself. But I'm having terrible trouble with this bridge because there isn't any way I can think of to do step by step exposure, and I can't seem to stop the terrible panic attacks each time no matter how much CBT etc I do.

Hi, I am desperate for help, so if anyone can help me ... I used to be so agoraphobic that I couldn't leave the house, but I have basically conquered that to the point where I can drive round most streets. My problem is that I live on a peninsula and to get into the big town where my work is (I've been on leave) I have to go over a motorway and a bridge. I can drive on the motorway now - I feel safe because of the breakdown lane. But the bridge takes about 15 minutes to cross and there is nowhere to stop and traffic is headed right at you at 80 mph from the other direction, so it would cause an accident if you tried to stop on the bridge. The only other way to get into town is by ferry but I have big panic attacks on that too, as that takes 15 minutes to cross and is always really crowded. I am starting to feel hopelessly depressed because I've been trying to conquer this bridge for about a month and haven't been able to. By the way, I can get across if someone else is driving, but during the day, there's no-one to drive me. I even tried catching the bus across but I panicked so badly I had to get off before the bridge. It's weird because I can catch the bus around my local streets. Can anybody help me? There is no foot bridge on this bridge either.
