Use the button "Click here to change your personal profile" to fix your quit meter. I am 62 and have been smoking for 50 years. I quit for about 9 months 5 years ago so I am not afraid I will die if I quit again. I am feeling lots better already. Tell your friend to get with the program, we need more old folks to keep you youngsters straight. Hi Fairy, Welcome back. You have already seen several stories to disclaim your friends fear, but I too wanted to share. My father smoked for about 60 years. He was a 3 packs a day person. It was hard to see him without a cigarette. He was also extremely over weight, never exercised, a diabetic, had a very stressful job. I am sure you get the picture. He was a walking heart attack. My family said prayers constantly. Well the good news is he quit smoking over two years ago. He says he feels better than he has in a long time. Thank the Lord he is still with us and planning to get married in the Spring. He is still working on his weight, but now has the energy and lung capacity to do something about that too. Please tell your friend we would love to have her join us. Fairy, You might want to remind your friend that cigarettes are the only product in America that if used as directed, will kill you. Welcome and good luck! fairy, On the left hand side of your screen, click on "Hall of Fame" and then go to the past Hall of Fame stories and have your friend read Nan's story. Nan quit after smoking for 60 years!!! How awesome is that?!?! If SHE can do it after 60 years of smoking, then you AND your friend can do it too! While you're there, read Duffis' story. Duffis is in his mid 70s and smoked for many, many, many years as well. I don't think that's true about dying right after quitting... that's just silly. I'm sure it's happened to people... you could also get hit by a train tomorrow too. But it's been proven that quitting increases your chances of living a longer, healthier life. Welcome to the site and I wish both you and your friend the best of success! Crave the Quit! Hi! It's me. I haven't been on here in nearly a year. My quit meter is wrong and needs to be reset:( I did have a succesful four month quit. Anyway I would like to quit again. A real good older friend(60+)of mine is thinking about quitting also, but she is deathly afraid of quitting at this point because she thinks that if she does she will die shortly after?!?! She is sure she read this somewhere. This is why she is afraid of quitting. Does anyone out there have their own personal story that I could share with her to dispell this? Or the facts/benefits for quitting after 40+years? I have looked online for a few hours and didn't come up with much. Thanks to all and I look forward to seeing you soon. I know where your friend got that idea. Years ago before quitting smoking became popular and smoking became socially unacceptable the only long term smokers who quit did so because they got bad news. The news that smoking was killing them. Or suffered the onset of symptoms that signaled the end of life. Many times in the last ditch effort they quit. They quit too late and passed away shortly after. Doctors would say "When you start coughing up blood, you'll quit." By then it was too late. I've smoked for 45 years and quit because my health no longer permitted smoking. Fortunately my symptoms are not signaling a terminal illness. There is nothing in cigarettes that will make a person healthy. I wish there were. There is nothing in cigarettes that is good for you. I wish there were. There is nothing in cigarettes that will prolong anyone's life. I wish there were. If your friend has smoked for 50 years and is suffering no terminal effects now, why not quit now rather than wait until she gets such bad news that she's scared into quitting, and quitting way too late.
