starting new things

Thanks for your help, everyone! I do feel a bit better about it. I'm actually kind of excited to go back to school. What I really dread is having to sit still for almost 3 hours and pay attention. I know it will be fine, I guess its just the whole fear of the unknown thing. I'm trying to be positive, though. ANON, I commend you for being able to sit through that long of a car ride! You are brave for simply attempting it, whether it gives you panic attacks or not :)

I too go to school at night after work. I know what it is like to start something new. The more we think about things the more anxiety it causes. But I know from many past experiences, the anticipation is usually worse than the actual event. We put so many negative thoughts in our heads. What's funny is right now I am going through a bad episode of panic attacks, and school is the only place that I am totally relaxed. It is probably because I am concentrating on other things rather than my anxiety. Good luck to you, I am sure you will do well.

Vervaina, I don't know if this helps, but when I've been in a situation like that sometimes I'll just tell myself something like "By this time tomorrow night my first day of school will be behind me and I won't be sweating it anymore." I often found that it's the anticipation that's the worst, and once I'm there I relax. I remember being a nervous wreck for 24 hours before my college graduation ceremony, but once I got into the building and sat down my body completely relaxed for some reason. Maybe you can even start thinking about some little way that you'll reward yourself after your first day so you can focus on that instead of on what can go wrong.

yes, i'm moving my whole life to a different town, i've been up to the town i'm moving to, to look for property, and its been freaking me out, i'm not too bad when im up there, but when i get back to where i am now, im panicky for days after, i suppose its the change i don't like, but i won't let it stop me from moving, im going back up next week, i think the biggest problem, is sitting in the car for over 600 miles!!!

Help! On Monday I start school for the first time in seven years. I've never been in a college course before so this is really nervewracking! I'm looking forward to learning as something to occupy my mind, but I am sooooo worried about finding parking, being late and sitting in a classroom. My day is going to be so rushed as I have to work for 8 hours then rush straight to the college and be in class right away! I'm not sure if I can do this. This week I've hardly even been able to go to work because I am worrying so much about school. Now I have to do both! Has anyone been in this situation (starting new things) while being in a really anxious/panicky time? Help!
