Somehow that didn't come out right. Muscle mass is not a bad thing, its a good thing, its just that Us ladies don't want too much of it. We don't want to be the female version of Arnold Schwartzenager (SP). But muscle mass is what keeps you lean and in shape, and is what gives you a better BMI. Muscle does weigh more than fat,but not that much more that you would be worrying! Windy, I do weights three times a week, not to build a huge muscle mass, but to keep trim, I use 5 and 8 lb wieghts, its just a twenty minute routine, and really tightens up things all around. You can sse a difference in 3 days. Bit noteworthy, is muscle is what burns the fat in your body, so the more muscle you have the more calories you can eat. Now just to clarify, I am female, so I found this program as a means of getting in shape, not to become a body builder, you'd have to do alot more weights than I do and more frequent to do that. Just my 2 cents. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 21 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 541 Amount Saved: $221.55 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 14 Mins: 42 Seconds: 40

Hi, This is my first post. Quitting is not easy (obvious) and the weight gain is irritating and Im no expert but I'm told that exercise will increase muscle mass and therefore you may weigh more. Also, its worth measuring weight by inches rather than pounds. Lose inches, you may not lose pounds because of the muscle mass increase! The other thing that I was thinking about was the phrase 'Smoking is not an option'. I don't agree. Its about choice. I either choose to smoke or not. I CHOOSE NOT :) Take care, Simon My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/31/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 48 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,446 Amount Saved: 360 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 20 Mins: 37 Seconds: 37

Hi Simon You are right that exercise may increase muscle mass. However, I've been doing weight training with cardio without any noticeable gain in muscle mass. (I do lighter weights with several repetitions - Fitness Instructor told me that when I want to gain more muscle, I will do heavier weights with less reps) I was stretching behind this tiny wee very fit lady the other day. She told me that when she started her fitness regiment, she saw very little change in weight but lost ALOT of inches. She looked great! (So...I agree, keeping track of pounds may not always be the best indicator) Windy My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/11/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 159 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,188 Amount Saved: $795 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 12 Mins: 44 Seconds: 33

Hey there Simon, you're doing very well.
exercise will increase muscle mass
I thought the only way you could gain muscle mass is through body building ?, If you eat healthy & do a little bit of exercise - is all good. Nicotine Cravings are identical to hunder pangs the problems exists where most ex-smokers substitue ciggies with food & don't do enough exercise to burn off the cals. Simon, "smoking is not an option" was the perfect mantra for me in the first few days of my quit when I was having a lot of physical cravings. Once, I got through the somewhat blinding physical part, I was able to see my way more clearly that I was making a choice, not suffering a prison sentence. I have also heard and read that it is good to choose other methods of measuring success than just the scales...on another site they call this NSV - Non-Scale Victories...such as I can get into last summer's jeans again!
