Thanks for your concern Angel. I do know a few people who have been addicted to xanax. I have never spoken with them directly about the drug and its effects, however. I basically have a GIGANTIC fear of ALL medications and drugs and have a hard time bringing myself to take even Advil for cramps. I just really HATE this panic feeling and wonder if xanax will help me with that. I don't know if I could ever "trust" a drug well enough to become addicted to it, but I do know that xanax can be addictive if taken every day. I want to feel safe and relaxed rather than panicky and fearful and I have heard Xanax has a relaxing affect. I would still like to know what some of the side effects are before I make my decision to use one. I have been begged by family and friends to take one whenever I panic, but I still don't know enough about the drug to "trust" it. I hope I have not rambled on for too long. Thanks for listening and caring. I hope everything in your life is going well. Thanks again.

Hi Kathy. I started taking Xanax some years ago. After awhile I started taking more than I should have. After years of being on Xanax,I realized I was doing more harm than good {it was even affecting everyone around me}. 5 years ago I checked myself in a re-hab.I stayed 14 days. The first 3 days were awful {detox}. I guess what Im trying to say is that Xanax can be a very bad thing. You will have people say that its not a problem if you only take the required dosage. Sometimes thats not the case. Its kinda like eating something you really enjoy--you cant seem to get enough. So,if you do decide to start taking the xanax, only take the dosage. If you ever find yourself wanting more--stop right then and think of what you might be creating. Good Luck.

I am responding to the fellow PA-er who stated they take 1/2 a Xanax to help panic. I have Xanax but I'm too afraid to take it. I was just wondering what type of 'feeling' you get from Xanax. Do you have side effects? I am SO afraid that it will relax me too much and maybe I'll stop breathing, my heart will stop beating, etc. Need I go on? I think this sounds really silly but all of you PA sufferers know exactly what I'm talking about... So does Xanax help with extreme fear and panic?

This is definitely a good method to use. I use it quite often, not with physical symptoms but rather with thought patterns. I can see them developing and then I can act quickly to prevent the spiral. First I self-talk and then I take a 1/2 Xanax. I continue the self talk for a few minutes more. Just knowing that the xanax will be working soon helps me calm the thoughts down and avoid the panic. I dont need to do this very often but it is great to have a solid method in place to be able to call upon. Sort of like changing a tire. If you have never changed a tire, a flat may frighten you, but if you have done it several times the flat would just be a minor inconvenience. It is good to know all you can about this sickness. Knowledge is power. Mike

I see a CBT once a week, I just wanted to share something he tought me that made sense. When you feel panic coming on, (physical symptoms) think of it like when it's cold and you get goose bumps. Why do you get them? Because you're cold. It's perfectly natural and you don't get scared when you see them because you know why they're there and that they'll go away in a few minutes... Basically, ALL the symptoms of Panic are the body's natural way of saying it's in fear of something. Although a panic attack is an -irrational- fear of something, still your body reacts by putting out physical symptoms, (all kinds) that scare us into thinking there is something horribly wrong with us, but there is NOTHING wrong, we aren't sick, we aren't going to die, because these symptoms are the bodies natural way of fighting fear. You should just say hey I'm feeling a little nervous, but I know it's just my body's normal way of reacting and it WILL pass soon. Do NOT be afraid of how your body acts when you are having a panic attack, it's only doing what's normal in the fight or flight response.... This makes sense.... Try it next time you feel it coming - talk to yourself
