Correen, lots of docs don't understand quitting smoking, anymore than non-smokers do. It isn't something they are trained for in medical school, and they only really know about it if they take the time to educate themselves. Of course, there are some who are quite supportive and knowledgeable, but my experience has been the opposite. As with many health issues, sometimes you can get more information doing web searches and talking to folks who experience the same. My doctor admitted that he didn't know how to direct me other than buy the aids. But I told him about this site, and he now at least gives the address to his patients.
I think you are right to question him. It might put him on the spot a little and encourage him to do a little research.
