Thanks Coben - Such great advice. If all my friends were like you, I might have quit sooner! thank you Cobenfan, I sure wish my 2 smoking friends would give it up, they had set a date for August and are still smoking and I think even more than before. I'm finding it very difficult to visit at their house now, the smoke really affects me. When they come to my house they don't smoke only outside. I can't stop them from smoking in their home, so it gets more and more difficult to socialise with them. We've been friends for 27 years I have to keep making excuses to meet outside their home, I'm going to run out of excuses soon. I love them dearly, wish I could help them. Trying to help a friend quit smoking? Scare tactics most likely will not work. We are adults and know better. We have seen pictures of what smoking does, did that stop us before? NO. Try these less harsh suggestions that actually came from smokers who quit who are now trying to help their friends quit: Let your friend know you care about him regardless of their smoking. Tell them you realize that giving up smoking is like giving up a good friend. By being supportive and nonjudgmental, you can help your friend through difficult times. Allow the smoker to set goals and make decisions about his smoking. Encourage your friend to exercise and participate in nonsmoking related activities. Let your friend know you are glad he has decided to quit. Focus on the positive health benefits. Let your friend know you believe they can quit. Adopt the smoker and help them through difficult times. Phone and visit your friend to see how he is doing. Help your friend stay away from cigarettes and other smokers. Consider giving up something (candy, coffee, etc.) yourself to support your friend. Encourage your friend to talk about his experiences. Listen. Offer rewards for reaching specific goals. Provide lots of positive feedback when your friend avoids smoking and reaches goals. Having the support of a kind friend during a quit is a comfort and is very calming for a person trying to quit this addiction. The knowledge that someone is there even if you don't have to lean on them too hard is priceless!
