Flight or Fight !

Good question Marianne...I've also wondered whether its normal to be a hypochondriac, for i certainly am one. I'm not obsessive about it, mostly it just comes down to missing work and other things. I have no concept of how sick i feel, or if i'm sick at all sometimes. I miss work b/c i think i'm sick, but really, this might just be a magnification of rather mild symptoms. I've always figured that its just b/c i have a little bit of a harder time dealing with my day than the average person, and slight illness puts everything else over the top and i give up. I don't so much worry about where my symptoms are leading, although if i have unusual symptoms (ie other than a sore throat, or stuffy nose or something like that), i tend to imagine the worst. For instance, i have chest pains, and wonder if i have cancer. It sounds so ridiculous when put like that, but at the time its a totally rational progression of events. I'm interested to hear what others have to say on this topic as well... Beth

Migraines must be an absolute nightmare, you have my deepest sympathy. I'm lucky, I never get as much as a heachache, but I've got no end of stomach problems. Can anyone tell me, are all people with anxiety/agoraphobia also hypochondriacs? Or is it just that we generally have a higher anxiety level than other people and get scared of the same things, only much more so, and it spirals out of control? I'd love to hear from other people who get scared about physical symptoms. Kajikit, I'm the same as you, if there is something wrong with me all my attention focuses on my body, and then every little tweak gets amplified. I'm aware of the physical manifestations of a panic attack, the sweating and breathing problems etc, but for me it starts the other way round. I get a physical pain first, eg a pain in my chest because of indigestion, or a sudden sharp sting in my back because I've overdone a twist in yoga, and I'm off. I get all the panic attack symptoms ON TOP of the original pain. I KNOW what has caused the pain in the first place, but that doesn't help me, I just can't stop it. I do self talk etc, but there is always this tiny little nagging voice that says "what if this is different, what if the pain won't stop and get worse and worse, what if this is a heart attack?". I do tell my little voice to shut up and not be stupid, I've been through this a thousand times, but since it's not a logical fear all the reasoning doesn't help. Does anyone recoginse this? Marianne

Hi Guys, If we could only get to the root of this awful "disease"! I used to get terrible migraines that lasted 2 days then went to a low grade headache for another 2. Now I get ALOT of low grade headaches. I once thought that the migraines were related to my cycle or the weather, but there's no consistent pattern. I do know that once I get these headaches I can't function too much with anything or it will go full fledge. Even a panic attack can put a severe squeeze on my head. Who knows??????????????????? 3 steps forward.....8 backward....such is life!

I'm the opposite... if I'm sick or unwell it focuses my attention more on my body's processes and I start to have anxiety over what's going on and what might be going wrong with me and all the various terrible diseases I might possibly have... unless I'm so sick that I'm flat out in bed sleeping all day, in which case I'm too exhausted and miserable to worry about a little thing like possible death! lol Seriously, if you have recognisable symptoms that you can pin a cause to (I've got a cold, I've got hayfever, I've got a migraine etc) then you KNOW what's causing them and you don't have to worry about it... it cuts out a major cause of anxiety, which is hyperawareness of your own bodily sensations. You don't have to think 'am I dizzy because I'm hyperventilating and starting a panic attack?' (which odds on will start one) you know that you're dizzy because you have a 102 fever! The known is never so terrible as the unknown...

Yes, I've noticed this too! I never have panic attacks when I'm down with a cold! I always thought it's because my panics are often triggered by stomach problems, and for some reason my stomach is just fine when I've got a cold. But maybe the body is just using up all the excess energy/adrenalin/whatever for fixing itself.

I have just discovered that I either am fighting all day, {ex. a cold, flu, infection,}, or flighting all day, {ex. anxiety and panic attacks}. If it's not one thing, it's another. I've noticed that if I'm coming down with a cold or a headache or my allegies are acting up, then I have no panic attacks. Does this make any sense to anyone? Is this the way things work? Does our body have to have 1 or the other going on? If this is the case, then I'd rather stay ill! Luv Janice
