Dealing with Emotions!

17 years ago 0 2631 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Thanks you guys....so true....and Lady, I really do appreciate the words of wisdom. Right now, sometimes when I am angry, it is hard to differentiate how much anger is related to quitting and how much relates to issues which need to be resolved. But you are right, now is not the time to try to address those issues. Tonight, had a nice dinner with friends and am enjoying brand new addition to our family (little kitten). Our older cat is slowlllllllllly warming up too! Well...I hate to admit it but after afew pretty good days, I am feeling kind of weepy today. It's taking a little while to get used to all of these new emotions related to quitting. I am getting used to the "cranky" form of anger which is usually a response to dealing with cravings, having a rough day, etc. However, I have noticed that, more and more, unresolved issues are coming to mind. As I mentioned in yesterday's post, I had a successful night of drinking without smoking....the part is that when I have a couple drinks, I feel much less inhibited about expressing my thoughts/feelings/opinions....and, to be honest, I think for awhile, I have been feeling angry about certain issues in my life. While it felt good to express the anger at the time (it wasn't directed at the people I was with), I am regretting it now. I also find that alcohol really does have a depressive after-effect for me. While I enjoy having afew drinks, I tend to feel down the next day. Well, today, for whatever reason, I am feeling weepy. Obviously, if these issues are on my mind, I need to resolve/address them...but I'm really sure if this is the right time. As I have also said before, I have learn't how to be assertive with the people I work with but have difficulty being assertive with the people I love. And...to be honest...I'm not even sure if I am angry at them or angry with myself. Oh well...as you can see...I'm kind of a mess today. Hopefully tomorrow will bring a better attitude! Just listening to me vent and keeping me support/advice is all I need. I suspect afew things are coming to the surface that I haven't wanted to deal with....but I am going to wait until I'm further along in my quit to decide how I want to address them. Thanks you guys..It's great to know that I can always count on you when I'm struggling. Windy, sorry that you're feeling down today, quitting makes you go through a roller coaster of emotions, just ride the waves, and you will sort it out eventually. take care of yourself today, reward yourself at the end of the day, this will help you a lot. One day at a time :)Marie My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/13/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 111 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,674 Amount Saved: $444 Life Gained: Days: 14 Hrs: 17 Mins: 17 Seconds: 22

Hi Windy - There were (and still are) many days where I feel out of sorts and angry for reasons that seemed beyond my control. Getting to know ourselves without our stress relieving crutch of nicotine is hard but I know that you are strong and can do this! I just had to find another way to vent - I came here and used this site as my virtual punching bag and before too long things got better...and you can do this too! Sometimes when you find yourself in a situation that is not going too well - like drinking and venting - you will need to remove yourself for a little while - just until you feel comfortable being there. Sometimes I found myself just getting angry at my friends (and husband) for continuing to smoke while I quit. I just thought everyone should do it as well as me (didn't work out like that) and to tell you the truth I wasn't very nice about it and was probably hard to live with at that stage of my quit. The good news is that it does get better as we go along. We DO find the ways to share our feelings without being harsh, we DO find that we can hang with friends and have fun! Let us know how we can help you and how you are doing. Cigarettes Not Smoked

Windy, You are still very early in your quit. Don't make any rash decisions. Quitting is a journey of self-discovery and a lot of us have spent time in that pity pot. I'm not so sure the alcohol had a lot to do with that but I would be careful if I were you. Typically alochol an a quit don't mix. When I smoked, I hid behind the smokescreen from a lot of emotions that I didn't even know existed. Quitting means that we deal with those emotions without our crutch, the cigarette. When the going got tough, I always smoked, and then moved forward. Learning how to move forward without the cigarette is difficult for a lot of us. I know it sounds weird but it is true. Take some deep breaths, get through each day at a time and let your quit evolve. You will return to a sense of normality soon. Until then, don't be so hard on yourself and stay away from making any life changing decisions. You may find yourself apologizing a lot during this part of your quit. I sure did. You will survive. The most important thing is that you do not smoke. Come here to vent when you need to. Much better to take it out on those of us that understand and have been where you are than to take it out on the ones you love. That is why we are here Windy. Hang in there. I hope this helps.
