Ugh those dirty smokers

Good for you! Only day 3 for me, so I'll stay away from social things for a while. But however, one does need to eat. Tonight, barbecue with my hubbie (also day 3) in the garden... I associate smoking with chatting and relaxing. Wonder how it will go... Well done! I went out to a Summer Ball last night. It was a black tie event people women wearing beautiful dresses and men in tuxedos. You know the kind of night. It was held in an old stately home hotel. With a huge marquee in the garden. It was interesting to watch. As smokers tried to smoke in the marquee and were asked to leave and go outside. They all huddled together, so I went outside, and said that i didnt smoke anymore. I said everytime I quit, I ask smokers, and they ALL EVERYONE say that they want to give up, and dont want to smoke anymore. As I stood there, someone else came out who was had been asked to leave for smoking inside. Later - we were sat in the hotel bar, having late drinks, and over and over people would light up, and a member of staff would come and ask them to leave. It was then, that i really realised that times really had changed. You could not smoke in a marquee in the garden, neither could you smoke in a bar. As smokers did light up they were made to feel completely humiliated. I drank, as it was a free bar all night - so I drank way too much! But i didnt smoke. I am so glad I am not smoking. Smokers I met last night were made to feel degraded, and humiliated for smoking. I am so glad that wasnt me. Daatske, Plan ahead for the barbecue. How will you cope with the temptation to smoke? If you can devise how you're going to deal with this type of situation before you're in it, you'll be better prepared to handle it if it does come up. Some members have found it helpful to bring a straw to hold & chew, some bring gum and candy to keep their mouths occupied and others choose to moderate their alcohol consumption. Do any other members have any other suggestions? Danielle _____________________________________ The SSC Support Team

That last few months when I smoked, the few of us who still smoked at work got pushed farther and farther away from the building. It got to where you had to schedule a 30 minute break just to smoke a ciggie. But what makes me laugh now is how we all seemed to have this bond as "friends." Nothing really in common except we smoked. Now that I don't smoke, I realize I didn't even like most of these people! I only hung out with them because they smoked. What a poor way to choose friends... Niks, the freedom we get from not smoking is just so fantastic. We don't have to be huddled outside of anywhere nor do we have to organise our day to have access to smoking nor anything else. For instance this year will be the first time I will not be looking for the smokers shelter in the airport nor counting the hours till the plane lands and I can get through immigration etc. Boy does it feel good to be free! Niks, Nice story - it's true and one of the many reasons I gave up. One of the many excuses people used to carry on smoking (me included) was it would spoil their social life - but the opposite is now happening - smokers will have their social life impaired as they are they are increasingly seperated. It's not entirely fair but if people give up because of it has to be a good thing :) You mentioned it was interesting to watch - it's one thing that helped me enormously to give up - watching smokers and their experiences. When you see someone light up and look for the pleasure they recieve -you'll see none - a very brief instance of relief initially as they try and get enough nicotine into the lungs then people generally smoke slower (as there is no pleasure other than satisfying the addiction). But enough of that and well done :) Welsh My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 859 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 17,197 Amount Saved: 4295 Life Gained: Days: 127 Hrs: 18 Mins: 0 Seconds: 11

Niks, Truly you are a force to be reckoned with! Your attitude since you have quit has been tremendous and you seem to be taking so much in stride. What an encouragement you are to others. A few more days and you'll have a MONTH behind you. Success is definitely on the horizon for you ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 8/5/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 702 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 14,056 Amount Saved: $3159 Life Gained: Days: 52 Hrs: 0 Mins: 40 Seconds: 19
