Hi Jan, Still trackin your progress, and delighted to see day 4 on your posts. From what i have read you are tackling the most addictive drug ever known, which is why it is not easy. If it was that easy there would be no need for this forum. So dont underestimate your courage, to tackle this drug head on requires a lot of courage, which you, Sparky, Gonnadoit, Windy, Grace, Phil, Maria are demonstrating in bucketfuls. In my opinion you are all HEROES. Bette Midlers song comes to mind "did you ever know that your'e my hero", so when MY second attempt rolls around again you can all be the "wind beneath MY wings" Just puttin it off a while longer, cus im fed up failing.... but havin said that i know im gonna beat this eventually. c ya Jan and again WELL DONE, AL

I'm only 4 days into the quit and I haven't been too bad eating wise. I do notice I'm getting a little hungrier than normal, and seeing as how I have weight to lose, this was one of my biggest fears about quitting smoking. so I'm keeping a very close eye on this topic and keeping tabs on the posts here. I was thinking about joining back with my weight club but I don't know if it will be too soon. If I did, I would be going next Wednesday. I keep hearing "one thing at a time", but I don't want to put on any weight. Any thoughts on this one? Thanks for the advice. I'll take it a day at a time and see how I feel. The quit IS the most important thing right now. I noticed I started gaining right away and now just leveling off. I gain about 5lbs in 3 weeks. I am just eating whatever I can put in my mouth. I will deal with a little gain now, most important dealing with the not smoking!!!! Then I will work on the extra flab. Going back to smoking is not an option for me not matter how much wiggle in my jiggle. I love jogging now and breathing is sooooo wonderful now. You can do this Jan...if you have to stay away from the scale!!! Hi Jan - I havent gained any weight so far. I'be been a bit careful, trying not to replace cigarettes with something bad. Scotch mints and mentos seemed to really work. I know I should also try for more fruits and veggies but those havent increased in my diet since I quit. Otherwise, I eat generally the same. I'be added a multivitamin for women and vitamin b6. I started exercising when I quit. I used to be a long distance runner so I thought "what better reward than to be able to do that again". I started out with 500 meters three times a week. Now I'm up to over 5 kilometers 4 times a week. I do 60 sit ups too - not a lot but hopefully enough to keep the weight the same. Anyway, doing these small things, I haven't been preoccupied with the weight gain issue. I think you should be proactive and do things that make you feel good about yourself. Stay away from instant gratification like chocolate and buy yourself something nice instead like new jeans for your fit and healthy body! Jan---My second or third quit in the last four months. I try to 'skip' over this thread on purpose!!! I also gained weight and became a bit obsessed by the gain. To let you know, I gained 20 pounds (feels like more) and put a lot of stress quitting, losing weight, family issues, etc... This go around, to hell with the weight, I'll worry about that later! p.s. The weight leveled at about 20 lbs. And now, even without trying, I am actually losing a bit.... :) SSSssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhh! I'm not weighing myself and I don't want to say it too loudly...but, I can tell because my "fat" clothes are too big! Jan, A few things may be causing an increase in hunger: * Nicotine is an appetite suppressant, take it away and you'll be hungry. * Smoking raises blood sugar, quitting keeps them down. When they get low, you're body signals you that it's time to eat Some quitters gain others don't. Everyone is different. Your metabolism will likely slow down and your body's ability to absorb nutrients is increased, this is why most quitters gain. Keep in mind your metabolism will readjust itself eventually. Tips: * Start an exercise regiment. In addition to keeping the waistline in check by boosting your metabolism and burning fat, it may also help with some other withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, disturbed sleep, anxiety, anger, sadness and constipation. * Keep those snacks healthy. Try ice water and raw veggies. Try cutting out refined & complex sugars and high fats. * Take your time when eating, it takes your stomach 15-20 minutes to tell your brain it's full. * Don't crash diet. Your body just hangs onto everything you put into your mouth and stores it. It also uses up muscles for energy when it's deprived of food. It won't use up fat like you'd want it too. Hope this helps. Be kind to yourself, weight gain is only temporary. Danielle ________________________ The SSC Support Team

Hi Jan... I think as long as you keep your quit THE priority and if adding a diet regimen doesn't add too much stress or threaten your quit, then I say go for it! It might just be the boost you need along with your quit to feel enthusiastic about your good health. We're all different. Some gain...some don't. Some can diet with thier quit..some can't. I was one of those that felt I couldn't. I stayed totally focused on my quit in the beginning so I'm just now losing the last of my weight. But..that's all right with me...because now I don't smoke. :) Just keep your quit #1 on your list. Let us know how it goes!
