I live in New Zealand so the winter months (not that cold) are June, July, Aug. I had heard of people suffering lots of coughs/colds etc in the days and weeks following their quit. But this did not happen to me when I stopped smoking last winter in July 2005. What I have had is about 10 colds this year, seemingly with only two weeks at the most in between... I have always been pretty healthy and I eat well and excercise. There is a theory that when you smoke, because you are constantly bombarding your immune system with poison, it keeps it strong and prevents things like colds much of the time. Obviously this is not tempting me to go and smoke, because I would rather have lots of colds than tempting cancer... I am just so fed up and I just want to be healthy... Anyone got any advice or support, would be most grateful...

This is my opinion and I'm sure you'll get lots. I used to joke that I didn't get colds because my lungs were so coated with tar that no germs could get through. If that were true (as well as the statement that poison makes us stronger) then we'd all be like Superman, wouldn't we? We'd just drink down that formaldehyde and insecticide instead of smoking it.
My advice is to go see your doctor and find out why you're getting so many colds. I'll bet it has nothing to do with a 14-month-old quit.
Congratulations, though! 14 months is really great!
Rusty :)

Celia,
You are right, smoking has a habit of masking illness and poisoning your body. You can be a little run down, so take some you time and relax.
Also check with your doctor to rule out anything above and beyond the common cold :)
Keep Strong,
Josie
