Bad Cough

I've had a deep dry cough since I quit. I've read you don't start coughing for 3-4 months after you quit. Is this correct? Yes, drinking lots of water. I also started doing aerobics. I haven't worked out in five years. Perhaps this is agravating my lungs too. Hi navigator! I have a dry cough too, and though it didn't start until I was about 20 days in, it is annoying but it residue coming up. Since all our quits are different, some people will cough alot some won't at all and it is normal for that person because we each had different smoking habits. No quit is identical. So don't worry about the cough, seems we all do at some point. I am 80 days in and still have to clear my throat. I am hoping it goes away after awhile. Hang in there you are doing AWESOME!! Many Blessings Sent Your Way!! Hi, I have coughed on and off all through my quit and still do occasionally and sometimes they still sound like a smokers cough!! Are you taking plenty of fluids on board, it is normal to drink less because lots of smokers light up with a coffee or some other drink. navigator, As you quit smoking you can experience an uncomfortable cough. You can start to cough up black/brown mucous. What is happening is that your bodys Cilia (which are tiny hair-like particles that line your lungs) are in a healing process. They are first paralyzed and your body does not want to produce any mucus, therefore a dry cough sets in. As the cilia begin to heal themselves they start to clean all areas of your lungs. This is where you start to cough up all that awful mucus. These symptoms can last day or weeks after you quit smoking. The healing is a long process of change, even though some of the benefits come more quickly than others. Try drinking more water, herbal tea and even cough drops or candy. If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable.
