You don't have to take it off a couple of hours before you go to bed, you can take it off right before you close your eyes and the nicotine will taper off as you go to sleep. Then when the first alarm goes off, slap one on, hit the snooze and go back to sleep. Then when you get up for real, it's already working. I am not using patches this time because I feel that for me they were just delaying the inevitable. I started back between the 2nd and 3rd steps. I want to get it over with right away. Patches do make me comfortable at first though.
