Hello I'm new and need some support to quit

Hi Niks, You made me think back to the first time my husband and I quit smoking. I warned the neighbors what we were doing. We both were very eager to fight. One day he wanted to leave instead of fighting and he was in the car with the window down and I came flying out the front door and actually dove in his open window...very insane...that was the first week. My husband had an accident on the job on October 28, 2005 and was in the hospital for three weeks. He had no other choice but to quit...his tibia was broken through the leg, the fibula was broken and his ankle was broken in three spots. He had to have a muscle and skin graft and if he smoked it would kill it. The doctor put him on more medicine for nicotine withdrawl than pain killers. I watched him for three weeks in that hospital going nuts from no cigarettes. That is what started me to slow down. I quit smoking in the house and my boss is an ex-smoker and I didn't smoke much at work. I quit yesterday when I couldn't breathe. The garbage can is still calling my name with 7 packs of cigarettes in it. Thank God the garbage man will be here in the morning. I hope I can get the support that I need from my husband as he had from me in the hospital...only time will tell. It has not been a good day for me as I have been home sick for over a week and it is very hard when you are doing nothing all day. I am really glad to have found this website and reading what other people are going through helps and it feels good to get the responses. I am looking for anything that will ease the horrible weeks I am about to endure and I am nervous about going back to work and being absent-minded and angry and every other emotion that will be going through my body. I will be seeing my doctor tomorrow for a follow-up on my breathing. I would like to look into something else beside the nicotine patches, I did it before and when I got off the patches it felt like I was starting over. WE CAN AND WILL SUCCEED..WE ARE NON-SMOKERS! Take care and keep the faith. Darcy

Today at work was ok. Tonight has been really tough. Its like my brain gets really tight - and I get really stressed and just want to smoke. Its day one, I am at the office, and the biggest danger point is when I actually forget that I am a non smoker. I have started to take Zayban again. Which is ok. I have accepted that perhaps I wont see my boyfriend for a couple of weeks if necessary as he might aggrevate the situation. If I feel ok, I will see him. But if he makes me feel bad, I am not going to smoke again simply to save our relationship. My health and wealth have to be more important. I am TIRED of going back to day one. I hope that this time I will keep going. Thank you for your messages of support. I am just going through the quit programme, its helpful. Thank you.

Hello, I have tried to quit smoking a few times, the most successful was 2 years ago when I quit for 3 months, I honestly do not know why I went back to smoking. It stops me from breathing properly, I even got cervical cancer which I was told was exasperated by my smoking, yet still I have continued to smoke. I have read the Allen Carr book, and found that helped. Recently I have really been determined to quit smoking, apart from anything I cannot afford it. My doctor has prescribed Zyban, which I found helpful, as it didnt contain nicotine. But i ran out of tablets. Tonight i picked up another months prescription. My problem is that after a few days, I pretty much go psycho. My boyfriend calls me pscyho sally, and I have said the most awful things. I am not normally like this towards him (or anyone else). Then we end up having a huge fight, almost breaking up, and I go and buy cigarettes. The first one tastes disgusting then it doesnt take long before I am back to smoking the same amount again. I really would like to be in a group with other people, So that i dont have to see my boyfriend whilst i am going through the worst. he is a very casual smoker, so doesnt understand that i am unable to cut down. The last time I quit, and we had a huge fight, i begged him not to be ok with me, and see that i am not really psycho sally, I so did not want to buy another packet of cigarettes, I know that the first three weeks are the most difficult, and then later, its an amazing feeling. As I have smoked since i was 15, so when i finally do quit, and am no longer craving the cigarette, when i get there, I am a person that I did not know exists. I want to quit smoking, but I dont want to lose my relationship. If I could get support from elsewhere - I would really appreciate it. I smoke around 20 a day, and have smoked for 22 years.

Thank you so much for your quick response, i cannot say how much it helps. Ok, I just smoked the last cigarette in the packet. Tomorrow I wont buy anymore. Hopefully this time, I can get through those first 3 weeks. Keep going. I have zyban so will start taking them again tomorrow and take a plentiful supply water with me to work.I will try to go to the gym after work. Fortunately he doesnt smoke - unless he goes out socialing and smoking at his house was not allowed. I always had to go into the garden. Which is why I often went to his as it was easier - but I did say some awful things. He tried to be supportive, sent me flowers to work, on two quit occasions. I went to North Cyprus last Sept and said when I return next year i will be a non smoker. I am returning again August 28th. So now is a good time to start. I cannot say how much I apprecaite your responses. I am determined this time to keep going. To stay quit. I hope that i have now smoked my last cigarette. My target is to go on holiday to Cyprus completely smoke free and no withdraw symptoms. Thank you x

Hello Niks, Like you, I am new too. Someone had a really good idea when they decided to make this site. What I am finding to be helpful is, coming here and just reading thru the posts, getting a feel for the community. I do this when I begin to stuggle with the desire to smoke. So far so good. Glad you made it here. Sorry to hear your support at home is not what you really need. The people here are great. They really helped me get through the weekend along with the support of my friends at work and my family at home. I went for acupuncture this time. I feel really good and quiting this time has been much easier for me than ever before. I saw a co-worker collaspe at work (a fellow smoker). Enough was enough and I got help. My first grandchild arrives in August and I want to be around to see more than just one grandchild. Hang tough and just think of the money you are saving by not smoking. I am going to treat myself to a facial on my one month anniversary. Think of something special you can do for yourself with the money you save because you did not buy that pack of smokes. My husband and I quit together. I have been concerned that we may loose our relationship because of this whole quit thing. But no matter what ... even if our relationship fell apart ... I AM NOT GOING TO SMOKE. My life is more important than my marriage. I just have to have faith that my marriage/relationship is strong enough to make it through this. If it isn't then that would be an eye opener that I deserved something better anyway. Where one door closes ... another always open ... we just have to have our eyes open to the possibilities to see them. Quit for you. Hey Niks, I'm new at it and it has definitely been a rollercoaster. Without this support group, I know for a fact I would be smoking by now. You will find a wonderful network of support here and also great information in the "tools" section. I vented this morning as I really had a rough day but with everyone here, I re-focused and was able to pull out of the funk I was in. You need to remember to do this for yourself. I started because I thought my husband and I were going to do this together. Some support here told me to do it for me not for him. It took me a couple days to figure out why I really wanted to quit but it made it worth while because I now have self-worth and am fully doing it because I want too and because I am in control of my life. Good Luck and know you have many many friends here!!!! Oh niks, I feel for you. The first days are not easy. Last year, when I quit, I did it for my b/f/fiance. Then he got all pissy with me, b/c I showed honest anger for the first time in our relationship and b/c I was so darn tired. Then he dumped me in my 4th week- that even made me more dterminde to keep the quit- for awhile, I thought of him as the nicopenis/nicldemon. Anyway, if your b/f loves you, he'll understand that you're going to go through changes. My psychotherapist thought him the b/f leaving me was the best thing that could have happened to me.... don't know about that. Anyway, I started smoking after 7 months of quitting and it had to do with being around the smell of smoke. So it is really important to not surround yourself with smoke at first, like Katy said and like you already know. Have hug and a smile :) You can do this :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 6/12/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 0 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 0 Amount Saved: $0 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 0 Mins: 0 Seconds: 0
