CONGRATULATIONS on 9 days Mich. Some things that work for me... Guided meditation. It's a wonder how 25 - 30 minutes listening to a cd in a darkened room can transport (and quieten) the mind (If you can find the time) I've posted this one before: When I'm really going crazy, I count, 1001, 1002, 1003... all the way to 1008... a full 8 seconds and then remind myself that somewhere, someone has just died from a tobacco related illness. That always brings me back to focus. I've actually just read a new statistic that says the real number may be a death every 6.5 seconds. How scary is that? Hot Herbal Tea or Ice Water can also be a great sorce of comfort. And if you just can't handle being in the house, because you can smoke there, get out. Go for a walk. Go to a Park/Zoo/the Shops/a movie, any place that diverts your mind. You can do this. Mich, I'm being tortured by the same addict thinking - and doubting my ability (and sometimes desire) to make it through the weekend. I've tried to schedule some plans with friends/family to keep me busy; I have several craft projects ready, etc. But, I know it's going to be extremely hard; and I'm worried about my ability to handle it. I have been relatively good with quitting up until yesterday afternooon. I keep questioning myself, am i doing the right thing, i could continue to smoke a few a day!!!! That would not hurt.... Then i realise that i DO NOT want to go through this again i feel healthier have saved money and my house and car smell great... I feel like the MASK... one moment want to smoke and the next dont want to smoke. Weekend coming up and that is where i may fall... At work we are not allowed to smoke in the offices so in the week it is not a bother but at home i could smoke!!! Help!!!!!!!!!! I can surely relate to you.....why.....i could EAT one right now....but i'm not giving in to a stick that just lays there and says "smoke me" "smoke me". Hard to believe it has had that much control over us. You are doing grrrrrrrrreat. Hang in there and remember NOPE (not one puff ever)...that has greatly helped me. That second weekend was so tough for me. I went on a trip and hung out with my sister, an all-day-long smoker. We stayed in a hotel room, went to restaurants, drank coffee, chatted. It was HARD! But after I suffered through it (breathing deep through a rolled-up-post-it, eating hard candy, moaning and groaning, breathing, waiting out the cravings, treating myself gently with lots of little rewards, keeping a sense of humor, talking about smoking in a non-judging but glad-I-quit-way), I felt so STRONG! You can do it too. It's just one simple thing -- DON'T SMOKE. That's all. It's hard, but it's not complicated. Use your coping mechanisms and get through it. Then give yourself a big fat pat on the back. Congrats on 9 days! Mich... Early in the quit the weekends were always the toughest for me as well. Replace that 'this is when I could fail' thinking with 'I refuse to fail'. Be determined to keep your quit. In the general forum we have a weekend promise thread where we all commit to being smokefree for the weekend. This is exactly why we do it. Make that promise every Friday and you will be amazed at how quickly that promise becomes easier to make. Quitting isn't easy and those first few weeks are enough to drive you insane. You just have to hang in there. It is quite a ride but it is an awesome journey to freedom and you will be so glad you stuck it out. You have 9 days quit and that is awesome. Keep building on that nine days. Every day is one day closer to never feeling this way again. Keep telling yourself that. There is no such thing as smoking just a few a day. One will always be too many and 1,000 will never Ever be enough. You are fighting for your life Mich..it is worth it. Don't give up on yourself. Mich, I completely understand the roller coaster you're on... I'm happy I quit... quitting sucks... I want to smoke... I don't want to smoke. Yes, the first two weeks are kinda like that. But guess what? You are one day closer to never feeling this way again!!! Make a plan for the weekend. What I suggest you do is try to keep yourself occupied and make a list of all of the things you will do instead of smoking when you want to smoke really bad. Preparedness is the key! If you tell yourself now "I will not smoke" and make a plan to carry through with that, then you'll be fine. Crave the Quit! Mich, The real kicker is that your office doesn't offer any more insulation from smoking than anywhere else. You always have the choice to smoke. But the cool thing is that you always have the choice NOT to smoke also. Pull out every trick in the book to get you through the weekend, just don't light up. Walk yourself through what it would REALLY be like if you did - the smell on your clothes and hair, the irritated throat, and then you'll have an entire pack telling you that you caved. Totally NOT worth it. 9 days is incredible, just keep thinking of all the benefits from being a non-smoker. Did you give yourself a one week reward? Maybe you can shop for one this weekend. Think of something ridiculously obscure so that it will occupy a huge amount of time. And read the thread called "Hi Folks..." from a cat named Squeeky. Be Blessed, Sandra P.S.
