New Freedoms

I like being able to go to the gym when I like rather than having to wait for an hour after a cig to get my breath back. I like being able to watch a DVD without having to pause for 10 mins I like standing next to someone without wondering if they can smell me My Milage: My Quit Date: 2/6/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 75 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 907 Amount Saved: 187.5 Life Gained: Days: 13 Hrs: 19 Mins: 25 Seconds: 19

I too used cigs to transition from task to task. It was a way to change gears mentally. A way to take a break. I don't always do it. But I'm trying to get to a place where those are just interruptions that I don't need.

So many, but the first things that come to mind: I LOVE the freedom of feeling my health instead of my potential illness(es). I LOVE the freedom that comes from sitting with my (very few) smoking friends and pitying them instead of envying them. I had one say just yesterday "Gosh I'm impressed with your dedication! I may have to try this quitting thing" - that made me so proud!! Hey Everyone, I'm really grateful that this group is here - The new people and the old-timers lift each other up in a way that can't be matched - because we all struggle daily with the same enemy. I may have 90+ days, but I'm just as close to my next smoke as any newbie here. I'd like to hear from everyone about the freedoms you enjoy as a non-smoker or quitter. Please, everyone, jump in on this. I'll start.... gpw: I enjoy the freedom to be around my church family without feeling like a fake. I can be around them for more than 3 or 4 hours at a time. I've always turned down invitations to weekend events because I couldn't find a private spot to smoke. And it was so irrational - they wouldn't have booted me or stopped associating with me! (unfortunately, some groups may do this, but not mine. We all know we're sick puppies - every single one of us!) gpw:I also enjoy not having to excuse myself from activities with my children to go outside and smoke. I used to smoke when it was time for me to switch mental gears and to escape any sustained, rigorous mental activity. I home-educate my kids and smoking just doesn't fit into the lifestyle for me. My Gosh, the teacher (me) used to have her first beer during her lunch break many years ago - what a school, huh?! That's all history now. YES!!! Thank God. My children had a very difficult time taking their drunk teacher seriously! Do you like the way you smell now? Do you like saving the money? Does it lift deep concern from your shoulders? Can you sing better? Please add on to this list. Thanks, gpw My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 97 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,463 Amount Saved: $388 Life Gained: Days: 9 Hrs: 0 Mins: 35 Seconds: 53

That reminds me......SEX is way good (!) as a non-smoker. I never knew it could be so good! That alone is worth all of the misery of withdrawl. gpw

What a great thread! So many freedoms where to start? I love not stopping and buying cigarettes on my way home from work I loved the time I had with my family knowing I did not smell and not having to go hide from them. I love really being able to smell the fresh spring air and the flowers. Deep breathes feel awsome :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/2/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 109 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,960 Amount Saved: $403.3 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 15 Mins: 59 Seconds: 52

I love the friends that I have made here. I love soaking in the tub for an hour and not having a soggy cig to contend with. I like knowing that I can smell the smokers. I like not having to hide from people. Knowing I can have company and not be afraid to let them in my house. Yep all those and many many more. Great thread, gpw. I enjoy the freedom to sit comfortably on the couch talking with my wife without having to pause the conversation, or make her go out with me, for my fix. I enjoy the freedom to travel for extended periods without having to stop for a fix. I enjoy the freedom to relax in a restaurant after a meal because I don't have to hurry out for my fix. How about 3 hours air time to LAX then 5.5 hours to Hawaii with out a cigarette is pure heaven. Last trip was a nail biting, scotch drinking nightmare.
