A message regarding the Patch!!!!

18 years ago 0 20 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Hello. I am new to this and not sure how to proceed. My quit date was Jan 1 2006. I am currently using the patch and I still have strong urges to smoke. Is this normal? Today I found my self looking at the butts in an ash tray. I was a heavy smoker for over 40 years and I have developed Emphysema which is why I quit smoking. This is charlie girl! I am a newbie! I just wanted to share something with everyone regarding the patch and how I thought I was doing what was "right for me". I used the 2nd step for a week and then the second week I only used the patch for a day and thought I was over it. Then about the end of week two I started to turn into the wickedest "b" you could ever imagine!! I was depressed! I ate everything I could get my hands on and I ragged on who ever opened their mouth to me. I then put a 2nd level patch back on cause I thought I was going crazy I was so angry. Only to start to feel better so what did I do... you guessed it stopped using the patch again and once again I became a total basket case!! That is an understatement. I was angry at the world and didn't know why! I was depressed enough to seek medical attention and make an appointment to start seeing someone for help. I credit this site for bringing me back to earth and making me realize that I was detoxing twice and I am happy to report that I will make it to my one month tomorrow and many more. I can't tell you enough how important it is to do what it says on the package and not what you think is right for you!! sorry for the long post. Thought it was worth saying.

Hi there, I quit Jan 31/06 cold turkey. I have never felt better. I quit smoking approximately 12 times a year. That right I quit with the patch, the gum, the inhaler. I would go one, two maybe even four days, then I would start again for another month or so and go at it again and quit. This time I decided to try cold turkey. I get cravings but I have been able to suck on candy instead of nic. gum. I haven't been as edgy. I think for me it's the best way. I am cleaning out my system completely. No more toxins. I feel pretty good most of the time. I feel proud and I am always giving myself a pat on the back. This is my quit story so far... You have to get off the nic at some point. The easiest way is following the directions by the letter, the hardest/fastest is cold turkey. Everyone needs to find what works right for them. I do know that no matter which method you choose, it's tough going it alone. This community is so important in my quit. Knowing that I can get the kind word or cyber-shoulder-to-cry-on 24 hours a day is a comfort beyond description. My family is wonderful and has been very supportive but my wife is still smoking and my kids and extended family are not junkies like me. The folks here understand everything I am going through and it's comforting to hear the voice of experience telling me that "it's OK" and "it will pass." Charlie girl, Glad you figured it out and are still quit, but I'm sorry you had to go through all of that first! Yes, it IS very important to follow the directions on the patch when quitting. Congratulations on 1 month! Crave the Quit! Butterfly In my quit, there was a specific point in time where I just got it. It was my "no turning back" moment... the moment when I finally said "this is it! I'm never smoking again!" And really realized what that meant. It meant that in order to stay quit, I couldn't have any... not even one. This is a simple concept, but one that I think takes many of us a while to figure out. I'd slipped 3 times before that point, and was staring a pack of cigarettes in the face... ready, willing and able to "slip" again, but realized that I wanted this quit... REALLY wanted it more than I wanted to smoke. So have any of you had that "ah ha!" moment? It could be a time since quitting, or a time before you quit when you just said "that's it! I'm done!" I think probably everyone has one at some point in time, whether they realize it or not... some are more profound than others. So what was the moment when you figured it out? Crave the Quit! Kaiser, The most common questions when quitting smoking is dealing with withdrawal symptoms. Each smoker has different withdrawal symptoms indeed yours will be unique! Although they may be unpleasant, they do pass. When you experience withdrawal symptoms, remind yourself that each symptom is a sign of recovery. Your body is in the process of healing itself. Think of withdrawal symptoms as growing pains. You need to come up with a plan! When a craving sets in, think about what are you going to do or what you can do to not give in! Try writing down some coping techniques to particular scenarios. For example, the house is clean there is nothing to do and the cravings kicks in. You have already eaten and you are in a state of panic. Try leaving the house, go for a walk, call a friend, jump on the site, have a shower. Anything that takes your mind off of temptation is beneficial. Quitting smoking is not easy and that is why we are here! We are here to help you learn on how to quit smoking and be successful. You can do this Crow! Keep us posted and be sure to jump back on the site to let us know how you have coped with your cravings. We all learn from each other! Take care and congrats on quitting smoking, Melanie _______________________ The SSC Support Team
