Hey Quiteordie, I haven't had the coughing part but the not sleeping well I can relate to. The first week I hardly slept, I think it was the nicotine trying to get out of my system. Like going through withdralls. It will get better I am on my 11th day and I am sleeping fine now. Hang in there.. Congrats on 6 days, we made it through that rough one yesterday together!!! Yah to Jess and Quitordie, you did it. You pulled through yesterday. I sure hope Stubow did. I am on day 16 and have had a couple real good nights sleep now and my husband wants to know whats wrong with me as I get up earlier now. There you go, normalcy has come. I never had the cough so I can only assume that I didnt have as much junk as the next smoker and my body was able to get rid of it without me hacking up a lung or two so I wouldnt worry about it. Glad you guys pulled through. Good Morning All, I have a couple questions that some of you may be able to help me with... My husband and I are in day 6 of our quit. He has experienced a lot of coughing and congestion whereas I haven't coughed at all. I've read that it is completely normal for coughing to happen but, just curious as to whether it is a bad thing if you don't. I've had some respitory issues over the past couple years and it just has me a little worried. My second questions is....when will i ever be able to sleep again????? Last night I slept for two hours and then was awake for the rest of the night!!!! The night before, I woke up at 3a.m. after going to bed at 12 and couldn't go back to sleep. Thank God I am a stay at home mom b/c I would be useless if I had to go into a job and be funtional. Hi QuitOrDie Each quit is different so, dont worry if you dont cough. I didn't, and i'm happy with that. About sleeping, in the first 3 weeks, i slept few hours than i was used to, and had more vivid dreams, but now i'm sleeping as before my quit. Everything got back to normal in my life now, except the bad things related to the smoking habit. Its hard, but after some time you will realise how good is to be free from cigarretes. Keep going. Hi Quit! I did not experience the coughing either, and have had multiple tests since I quit smoking. So! Unless you feel bad, I wouldn't worry about it. I disagee with Josie on the sleep business. Two or three hours is not enough sleep, but gotta tell you that the insomnia business gets better, just don't obsess about it. Try some herb tea or chicken soup before bed!! Did your husband smoke alot more than you did? His body is getting rid of the junk that cigarettes left behind. That should subside in a week or less. As far as the sleeping...this too shall pass. I can't give you an exact time or day...each person's quit is much different. I wouldn't try to compare your quit to your husbands. Each of your bodies have dealt with the smoke differently and will therefore heal differently. Congrats on making it to day 6! What an awesome accomplishment! Each day does get better...I promise! Quit, For your hubby, As you quit smoking you can experience an uncomfortable cough. You can start to cough up black/brown mucous. What is happening is that your bodys Cilia (which are tiny hair-like particles that line your lungs) are in a healing process. They are first paralyzed and your body does not want to produce any mucus, therefore a dry cough sets in. As the cilia begin to heal themselves they start to clean all areas of your lungs. This is where you start to cough up all that awful mucus. These symptoms can last day or weeks after you quit smoking. The healing is a long process of change, even though some of the benefits come more quickly than others. Try drinking more water, herbal tea and even cough drops or candy. For you, As a smoker your sleep may have been interrupted by constant coughing and/or difficulty breathing. When you stop smoking, your body gets healthier and the sleep you get is more restful. So if you wake up suddenly at 5:00 a.m., you may think you are a victim of insomnia. You're probably not! Your body has probably had all the sleep it needs. Smoking drains your body's energy. When you quit smoking you regain this energy. You may need fewer hours of sleep. If you have a symptom that persists or seems worse than you expected, you should immediately consult a doctor. Its possible that your smoking has been masking symptoms of some illness, and when you stop smoking the symptoms abruptly become noticeable. Hope this helps, Josie ______________________ The SSC Support Team.
