There is increasing pressure in the UK to ban smoking in public places. Shopping centres, bars and other public places..in fact, many government buildings, libraries and hospitals have already done so. We now have the bizarre sight of post operative hospital patients smoking in their dressing gowns at bus stops, having had to leave the actual grounds of the facility. These pictures on the local evening television news make a real point about the addiction to nicotine. But in true British style (and copied around the world I suspect)the politicians cannot bring themselves to ignore the one in four adults in the UK who still smoke from a vote point of view. Current proposals to ban smoking in pubs is going to be limited to those that serve food. Do they not realise the tragic consequences of this action!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ordinary people are going to be forced to go outside for a pie! The pastry will get soggy in bad weather, the doorways to countless bars and premises will be crowded with furtive looking people chewing on sausage rolls and pork scratchings. Speak easys will spring up in run down parts of town, furtive and dirty looking places where addicts can feed their desires for steak and kidney pie with mushy peas! If employers follow suit, then doorways to office blocks will be crowded with unhappy people with tupperwear lunchboxes and thermos flasks. The rest of us will be forced to choke and go hungry in smoke filled rooms as the major pub chains throw out the menus in pursuit of profit on drinks. Or stay at home until the politicians come to their senses Mad Englishman My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/8/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 66 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 463 Amount Saved: 330 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 0 Mins: 43 Seconds: 46

lol, good post But........there has been NO SMOKING in restaurants, bars, work places, in other words there is NO SMOKING in any public place here for at least 5 years now. I have watched the people at hospitals stand outside puffing away in their gowns, sitting in wheel chairs and with IV's hooked up. Walk out of a bar and see the amount of butts in cans, disgusting!!! Just wanted to let you know it does happen and it will probably happen in your country too. BTW, I am from Ontario Canada if your wondering. I am a BIG nascar fan though, can't wait for Daytona next Sun :) It is nice having no smoking here now that I have quit, it wasn't when I was standing outside puffing in the cold though lol.
