I can see it coming ... unsurmountable?

I have been surprised during this beginnings of my eternal quit at how little the cravings have moved me. The knowledge I gained reading these posts has enabled me to see the truth through the veil of lies told me these many years by the smoke demon. The most revealing has been that all these years I thought I was relaxing because of the smoke when in reality it was the smoke that had caused the anxiousness to begin with and I was only feeding the addition and feeling like I had been relaxed. I believe that I can handle most the situations that come up from now on, but I discovered one that will be the supreme obsticle for me before I can make this quit stick for good. I discovered today that someone I worked with in the field (construction site) is a smoker. All the previous encounters had been in a hospital construction area (no smoking allowed, of course) but this time he came by my office to discuss some project details. The stench of smoke preceded him, even over the ammonia fumes of the blue-line drawings laying all around my office. He never knew how disgusting the smell was, and I realize that he (and I) had smelled the same just a week ago. This encounter put some wheels into motion in my mind that could spell disaster for my quit. Thus far, my wife has taken her smoking outside, or to the other end of the house and kept all the stuff out of site. Up to this point, I didn't have a sense of smell untainted by smoke. I can now smell smoke on her, in her hair, on her clothes, but she brushes her teeth afterwards so her breath is fresh. We have had the discussion previously and she is resolute that she will not quit. I love this woman more than life itself and cannot be apart from her yet I cannot be close without feeling repulsed from her by the smoke fragrance all about her. My sense of smell is rapidly returning to 'normal'? so I don't know how much time I will have before this becomes a real problem. I've got to find a solution to this before I can progress in this quit, but I am resolute enough to stay away from smoking. There has got to be another way. Thanks for the response. I am sorry for the wierd post, I seem to have been drifting in and out of light depression the last few days and not sleeping well. I slept very well last night for the first time since the quit and it was great! It is very reassuring to know that this repulsive feeling I get around smokers will lessen with time, I was afraid it would continue to intensify and that was scary to me. ByPass great job on quitting. I can relate to your issues of smellin smoke on your spouce. My husband is still smoking, says he's going to quit but i don't feel he's serious about it. He smokes in one room of our house with the door shut. He has been respectful in a sence where he understands that i may be repulsed by his smokiness and he'll take a shower before coming to bed to get rid of the smokey smell. So far i haven't had any issues with being repulsed by him. With that said i have gone to give him a hug and have smelled smoke on him but i just back away and tell him he's stinky! Mabey my sence of smell is damaged cause it doesn't seem as though it's bothering me as much as it is you. Mabey all of my smell hasn't returned yet. I hope your spouce will have a change of heart and quit, just don't pressure her & hopefully she'll come around. Good luck to you!!! Just worry about your quit at the moment Bypass.....get a few more weeks under your belt and things may feel different. I went through a stage of being very anti smokers......and that has changed to pity, cos I was once the same. Can't pretend to like the smell but I used to smell like that. Keep on not smoking! brent My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/8/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 43 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 306 Amount Saved: 215 Life Gained: Days: 7 Hrs: 7 Mins: 7 Seconds: 20

Bypass, Congratulations on your decision to quit and welcome to the site. Nothing is insurmountable if you want it badly enough. Your quit is about your life. You quit, you live, you smoke, you die. Pretty simple stuff there. The vile stench that a smoker carries with them is one of the things that an active smoker is never really aware of. The newly quit person will become acutely aware of smokers very quickly as the sense of smell returns. As the others have said here, your repulsion to this foul odor will subside in due time. It is much like working on a hog farm. At first you will want to puke from the odor, but after being in the hogs fine company for a while you will become desensitized to it. Great analogy, huh? Now that you know it will be all better soon, imagine for a moment what a "never smoker" guest smells when he/she comes over to your house and sits around your dear wife? Pretty nasty stuff to think about, isn't it? But hey, you and I were there once! Sure am glad I smell all rosy now.. :p Oh, and your wife pledging to smoke forever? That is good stuff. I'll stop here. :8|: Be Strong. Be Smart. Hi Bypass, I read your post, but I'm not sure what you question is. Are you saying that the smell of smokers in your life is going to be a problem? A problem for keeping your quit, or a problem for the relationships? Well, in any case, I posted a thread early on in my quit. My wife had made dinner, and I smelled something so horrible and couldn't figure out what it was. It slowly dawned on me that it was the spinach that she had prepared. Now, she had made this in the past and I never noticed the smell. She has made it since that time, and it didn't bother me again. I guess my point is that maybe your sense of smell has become hyper extended. Mine did, and after a short time, everything returned to an even keel. Don't let the smell of someone or something put you off your quit. Let your quit be an example to the still smokers. Don't push them to quit though, that will just keep them smoking longer. I fully agree with jags.....stale smoke was incredibly horrible when I first was able to smell!! then it got back to where it belonged on the scale of 1=10.....it's still not pleasant, but it's way more bearable than at first......when I first come upon it, it stinks....then the longer I am around the person or situation, I cease to notice it. whatever you do, don't hound your spouse to quit....it will NOT work....just be an example.....as we all know around here..... smokers "watch" quitters.....she will watch more closely witout the lectures. hang tough and keep kickin butt Katy My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/4/2002 Smoke-Free Days: 1477 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 59,093 Amount Saved: $8123.5 Life Gained: Days: 192 Hrs: 16 Mins: 41 Seconds: 52

bypass, Thank you for your honesty. Realize that this is your quit and you must protect it at all costs. You can not make someone else quit, they have to want it. Your determination and strive towards your goal may or may not persuade your wife to go down the road also. What you are feeling is normal and in time it will subside. Know that we are always here for you. The love of a good woman is irreplaceable. Keep going and focus on the positive. Keep Strong, Josie _____________________ The SSC Support Team.
