Moods, emotions, personality...

Thanks, eleveno, this sounds like very sound advice. I'm sorry to hear about your experience.

I'm aware that I'm a terrible hypochondriac as far as my mental health is concerned.  From the research I've done, I'm pretty certain that I'm just boring-old-depressed. I think I've always been a bit up-and-down, and the depression/anxiety has just exacerbated that.

Hi Pete. Please be careful with what you read about mental health conditions. Last year I thought I was with a bipolar disorder because I had mood swings. Because of these mood swings I started reading about the bipolar disorder on the Internet and thought that almost certain I was with this condition. Then I consulted a doctor and "convinced" him that I was with a bipolar disorder. The doctor prescribed meds for the bipolar disorder and during several months I was with this medicine. I didn't get better and thought that something was wrong. I told my doctor about this and he told me to keep the treatment. Still not getting better. Then I consulted a new doctor to have another opinion not trying to influence him in any way and was diagnosed with depression. 2 months ago I was prescribed antidepressants and still adjusting the right meds but I already feel some improvement.

Ashley, thank you so much for your help.

I'm just all over the place at the moment (something pretty intense and uncertain going on in my personal life), but when things have calmed down a bit I'll do some serious research on the things you pointed out.

The fluctuations are kind of a flag for me though. You might want to focus your research on that. You also might want to look into Andropause.

Let us know what you find out.

Hi Ashley

Thanks for your reply. I've done some reading on Borderline Personality Disorder, and whilst I have several of the traits associated with BPD, they don't seem severe enough to really match up. My everyday behaviour is not a problem, I don't have stormy or unstable relationships, all my turmoil is inside.

I'll do some reading on Bipolar Disorder - my knowledge of that is very basic.

I'm very reluctant to go back to a doctor, and I hope I can bring all this under control myself without falling back into the hands of the system.

Hi Pete,

I need to point out I am not a doctor and I cannot diagnose so I would encourage you to talk about your symptoms with a doctor. Getting a proper diagnosis is very important in determining appropriate treatment. Mood can be affected by a lot of factors, a mental illness or disorder, diet, exercise, time of year, environmental factors, hormone imbalances, etc., etc. So making sure all areas are checked out are very important.  You may also want to take our WB-DAT.net screener to have a review of your symptoms.

From what I know about depression most depressed individuals say they feel down most of the time with little to no time being labelled as "happy". So it is interesting that you say you are having these large fluctuations. While reading your post  two disorders popped into my mind that you may want to do a bit more research on.  The first is Bipolar Disorder. You can read about Bipolar Disorder in the Education section.  The other disorder that came to mind is Borderline Personality Disorder.  This disorder's symptoms does include mood fluctuations and risky behaviour amongst other things. You may want to read up on it.

Let us know what you find out.

A question for those in the know. Is it a normal part of depression to have such fluctuating moods, to feel at times totally beaten down, at others uncharacteristically aggressive, sometimes euphoric? I worry that I have some sort of personality disorder as well - I just seem so at mercy to emotions which come and go seemingly at random. My external behaviour is apparently pretty stable (I suppose I have my acute self-consciousness to thank for that) but inside is such a changeable, stormy sea.

I wake up each morning and wonder how I will feel in the morning, at lunchtime, later in the afternoon, in the evening ... and I just don't know and seem to have no control over my moods and feelings.

I see myself as basically a 'good', moral kind of person and naturally cautious, but I have done things, risky things, way beyond the pale and taken pleasure in doing so. Five minutes later I am deeply ashamed, ten minutes later I don't care, fifteeen minutes later I'm celebrating it, only to sink back into shame. Round and round we go, and it's so stressful. It feels like I just don't know myself.

Surely I'm not alone in feeling this way. Am I?
