Myth: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), formerly known as "shock treatment," is painful and barbaric.
Fact: ECT has come a long way since it was first introduced in the 1930s. Today, ECT is considered for patients suffering from certain mental illness such as severe depression and bipolar disorder that have not had any significant improvement from antidepressant medications; have responded well to ECT treatments in the past or need immediate treatment to avoid suicide or other similar acts to prevent self-harm. A team of health practitioners are present during administration of ECT to ensure optimal safety of the patient. Patients are also thoroughly monitored post-treatment.
