all i know i have a friend who took ECT it helped him
9 years ago, he seems slightly different but maybe I never knew the real him before, only the person he thought everyone wanted him to be, I felt it was nervewracking when he went through the op (don't know how he felt about it tho as I wasn't allowed contact, this is because for him it meant that only those who were visiting him regulary were recommended as I was told it was easier for him to handle a few rather than lots of people all the time... I was at Uni when it happened so that's all I knew...)so how much more nervewracking it must have been for him + his family!
& it took a while for him to really get back into things but he's doing great now, good job, renting with flatmate, good church life too... So yes it works.
Not sure if this will help with your decision or not. I had ECT back in the '70s when I was unable to pull out of a depression resulting from childhood trauma.
I remember having difficulty with short-term memory loss for a while, but with meds and counseling, I was able to pull my life back together and, though I've still struggled with intermittant bouts of anxiety and depression all my life, have never regretted getting the therapy.
Hope that if choose to have it, it works for you. I'm sure the techniques and protocols today have advanced from my '70s experience.
Hello Shoe43,
ECT is usually given up to three times per week. People may need 3 or 4 treatments or up to 15, depending on each individual case. The treatment istelf can be done on an inpatient or outpatient basis. Returning to work would depend on you and your doctor. Your doctor should be able to get a video about ECT for you to watch that will help prepare you.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
I've been treated for major depressive order for the last 15 years....I've been on countless different medications and I've only been a partial responder....My doctor is now asking me to consider ECT therapy....Are there any of you out there that have been through this?......How long would I be out of work for my initial treatments?.....How often do you need "maintainance" treatments?....Are you able to return to a somewhat full and normal life afterwards?...(Not that we're ever full and normal with this illness)....Any input would be appreciated....Thank you..
