Your Top 3- Thought Provoking Questions

I believe our child-self remains in all of us.  The question is whether we listen to that part of ourselves!
As Davit said, think young, feel young.  And a cup of coffee helps once in awhile

What activities do you do that makes you feel young at heart??

First day!!

We always thought that our parents were devastated to see us move out of the house...I can now see them secretly celebrating their new-found freedom!

Bren, it sounds like you were able to tackle the daunting task of  'spring cleaning' with relative ease and it's always nice to bring in new flowers (new life!) into the home.

Hugs4U, I just wanted to say how lovely your comment is.

Hope you all enjoy that kind of day that makes you good tired!

Thanks for your thoughts Davit. Working through core beliefs/thoughts/assumptions isn't easy but it's almost always beneficial. Glad to hear you found the program helpful with this ~m, keep up the good work.

uncomfortable day today...

Hi Bren,

I'm glad to hear you're taking time out for yourself tonight -you deserve it after a busy couple days.
It's important that you are gentle with yourself.  What are other things you find help you stay focused? Relaxed?

A bump in the road

Hi Bren,
Hope you're feeling better this morning.   Coming down with strep throat is no cup of tea(!).
Before starting to take antibiotics though, I suggest seeing your health care professional.  They will do a a quick swab of the back of your throat to test for a bacterial infection.  You may feel symptoms that are similar but is not a bacterial infection, so your doctor may not recommend antibiotics...it usually will resolve on its own if that's the case.
Continue to take good care of yourself, eat well, drink plenty of water, get plenty of sleep - all the essentials to feeling our best!

Feeling safe inside!

Hi Bren,
I'm sorry to hear your husband is still not well.  Unfortunately it takes a few days (too many it seems!) to recover from strep throat.  I'm glad that you were able to find a good distraction that helped alleviate some anxiety.  I hope you find time in your day today to get some needed sleep!

Negative core beliefs €“ Part III

Members,

In general, there are three types of negative core beliefs:

•    Negative Core Beliefs about Yourself
•    Negative Core Beliefs about the World and Others
•    Negative Core Beliefs about the Future

All negative core beliefs can cause problems. Theories also suggest that certain dispositions and certain life events will affect people differently. There are two categories:

•    Sociotropic: concerned about relationships, concerned of the possibility of disapproval, ones sense of self- worth is based on acceptance & love from others, wants to maintain close relationships & worries about being unlovable.
•    Autonomous: have a high need to be independent and reach goals outside the relationship, sense of self worth is based on productivity, achievement and control, overly concerned with the possibility of failure & worried about being incompetent or unable.

According to theories such as by Beck, the matching between dispositions and life events can make the difference between could impact the severity of impact the life event will have on the individual. ۬۬For instance, a sociotropic is more likely to be negatively affected by a break-up whereas an autonomous by being fired from his/her job.

Which category do you fall into?

hope you can relate

Hello selena,

Thank you for sharing. I love your final comments:
- "we are never as alone as we feel"
- "we have all survived this long and we will keep surviving"
and, perhaps most importantly when we feel trapped in a situation/emotion/moment - "this too shall pass"

Many here share your experiences and concerns, feel free to use the search function to find more affirmation of your above statements! Keep reminding yourself of your own wise words, and as justducky said - the important thing is to not stop doing things, even if it's small steps!

I've listed some things to consider below, that may help when planning exposure:

1. Learning occurs at moderate levels of anxiety and arousal. In planning your exposure work don’t make it too easy or too hard. If you pick something that doesn’t cause you any anxiety (a fear rating of 1 or 2) you won’t experience a drop in your fear rating because there's really nowhere to go.  As a result, you won't unlearn anything. On the other hand, if you pick something that causes a fear rating of a 9 or 10, it may be too difficult. Try to stay in the 3-8 range.

2. Exposure should be predictable. Plan your exposure work in advance and stick to the plan. Unplanned exposure doesn’t work well. Planning your exposure makes it a bit more controllable and a little less frightening.

3. Set a goal for the exposure that you can reach. Set a goal for the exposure session. You may want to stay in the situation for at least a certain amount of time (say 30 minutes) or experience a certain decrease in you fear rating (say go from a 7 to a 5). Setting a reachable goal will give you something to aim for. Achieving your goals step-by-step will allow you to feel good about what you're accomplishing.

4. Stay in the situation until your fear goes down. This can happen in two ways. First, if you pick a situation for an exposure that causes you a fear rating of a 4 to 8, then after an hour you should be experiencing a drop in your fear rating. If not, maybe it was harder than you thought. However, there’s another way to experience a decrease in fear, which is to repeat the exposure again and again. So for example, if your anxiety doesn't come down from an 8 in the first hour, try it again the next day. Eventually, if you repeat the experiment every day, it will start to drop.
5. If something is too hard, pick something just a little bit easier. If you end up having a fear rating of 9 or 10 try to figure out what you could do that would be almost the same but would result in a fear rating of 7 or 8.

For tomorrow, keep in mind that you have already succeeded.  Let the previous successes give you the strength to take on these future challenges.
