Welcome Michelle!
I too am concerned about weight gain (I gained 20 pounds during a previous quit). This time around I am trying to distract myself by putting myself in situations where I would not have smoked even when I was a smoker (shopping with my daughter, walking in my neighborhood, etc.), this has helped distract me without using food. I know everyone tells us not to worry about the weight in the beginning, and I am preparing myself to gain a few pounds but trying to keep my weight gain at a minimum by using other methods. I have also been drinking what seems like gallons of water each day and keeping up with my exercise routine.
Best of luck, we can do this!!!!!!!!!

Hi friends,
Something I noticed as I was loading up on sugar free candy in preparation for my quit- lots of them have around 10 calories per piece. So if you're having several each day this could load on several calories (and later pounds)! I quit long ago for three years, gained 20 lbs. and started smoking again and lost it all. What I know this time around is I can lose weight at some point down the road by reducing my food intake and increasing my physical activity- before I just took the easy way out and started smoking again. Let's all be kind to ourselves and realize we may pack on a few extra pounds in the beginning but we can lose it without returning to nicotine.
p.s. please remind me of this post next month when I am moaning about my weight gain
Have a great smoke free day!!

:)Phil, I've only been posting a couple days and already I enjoy your humor (I tend to be a little "dry" in the humor category as well). No I can't see in the dark-yet. I only wish I could see into the future to see if I'm still not smoking in 6 weeks, 6 months, 6 years, etc.

Stacey,
Welcome and congrats on your quit!!! I'm only one day ahead of you so perhaps I can let you know what's around the bend. For me day 3 has been pretty much like days 1 and 2. I did notice today how much I was previously pre-occupied with smoking. I turned on the oven for dinner, saw that it would take 9 minutes to preheat and on auto pilot turned to go to the garage for a smoke (but I stopped myself once I realized what I was doing). I've been catching small triggers like this frequently over the past few days- it amazes me how hard I had to work to schedule all my smoke breaks before!
We can do this!!!!!!!!!!

Hello March Mellows, I love the name. I am 3 days into my quit and things are going okay- mostly in part to this website. I'm using the patch (14mg) and it has taken care of all the physical symptoms, the mental cravings are quite another issue though.
Rachel-we are all pulling for you, hang in there!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe your patch is too strong, I would contact your Dr. about the problems you are having. This quit stuff is hard enough without additional symptoms.

Welcome Last Puff!
I'm happy you stumbled upon this website, I hope you find it as helpful as I have (and do).
I tried quitting 4 times before and always returned to the nasty habit. This time seems different for me, mostly due to the preparation and support offered by this website. I am only on day 2 but I will happily keep you posted on what I'm going through and offer any support I can.
Congratulations!!!

Welcome Connorbaby!
I'm glad you found this site and are planning a quit. I tried to quit 4 times before with only modest success. This time I, like you, planned ahead. Three months before my quit I started exercising and lost 8 lbs in anticipation of weight gain once I quit-and I am continuing to exercise now. I also spoke with my physician about quitting, together we decided the patch was the way to go. This site offers many tools to prepare you, and as I am now finding out a ton of positive support and feedback once you take the plunge!
Best wishes and visit often!!!!!!!!!

Jojo
It's called an addiction for a reason. If it were an easy habit to break I wouldn't be sitting here typing on my computer, drinking gallons of water and sucking on sugar free candy. This is my 5th attempt to quit and I think this website has a lot to offer, so please don't stray too far from it. Everyone's quit is different, for me I had to quit all at once, however, my husband has had success (and some failures mind you) weaning himself off slowly. We will continue to be here for you and I will add you to my prayer list.
Hang in there, Dupe

Here's a trick that my Dr. told me about, it sounded silly in his office but really helped me. I tended to smoke on a somewhat of a schedule- I ALWAYS smoked 3 cigarettes on the way to work and three more on the way home. My Dr. suggested I get baby carrots to use in the car. I tried it today- I held one between my fingers like a cigarette and held my hand towards the window (I didn't crack the window and pretend to flick the ashes but I suppose you could), then every minute or two I would take a small bite of the carrot until it was gone. My commute to work this morning was sooooo much calmer than I anticipated- three carrots and I was there!
Hope this can help someone else!
