No thanks for the memories....

This site has really made me do some soul searching and has regenerated memories that I've long forgot. My grandpa was a smoker I watched helplessly as he slid out of his lazy boy gasping for his last breath as his lungs filled with fluid and his face turned blue. I was a teenager then, that didn't deter me because I was young and invincible and by that time smoking socially with friends and alone in the car when I knew I wouldn't get caught. My parents are smokers, My husband is a smoker (I wouldn't have dated anyone else but a smoker!) His parents are smokers, and my friends are smokers. Who isnt' a smoker you might ask? My 5 year old daughter, at this rate she will be one day. Not if I can help it. My daughter has recently expressed her opionion of the smoke in the car. I remember doing the same thing, taking long car rides and telling my Dad to put out his stinky cigarettes. I can envision her one day being just like me. I want the cycle to stop. I want everyone around me to stop smoking too. Dad says if I can quit for 30 days he will too. We'll see about that. I will encourage him with the empowerment I've gotten from all of you already! I know he genuinly wants to, and that would be a good reward for me. I love the thread about what everyone will not miss about cigarettes. That really helped me with my first day. We went to a restaurant last night. Much to my husband's dismay we sat in the non-smoking section. I was very proud of that. I've always diverted my attention the other way in case there was someone sitting in that section I knew. I am so ashamed of being a smoker. I'm ashamed to have people smell the 2nd hand smoke. I'm ashamed of the mess I make with it, and the time it takes to do it, and the money it costs to enable it. :( So here I sit fighting my intense cravings eating trail mix, making a heck of a mess, and very proud of it! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 9/14/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 1 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 24 Amount Saved: $3.5 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 2 Mins: 58 Seconds: 50

Nicotine patches !@#$%

Generally, it is recommended that patches be removed when exercising as an increase of body temperature can increase your body' absorption of nicotine from the patch. That's what I was afraid of. I'm so warm natured that I think I'd get to much. I've opted for the lozenge. So far so good. No thanks for the memories....

It seems I'm also a warm chicken. I finally broke down and bought some mint lozenges. I have to tell you I didn't realize my fuse was so short. In the US they keep all the nrt's behind the counter. Who can read the packages, you'd think they were rare diamonds. I was really mad at that sales lady. I opened the box before the sale was complete. I was in NEED! Not the kind of need where you eat a couple of grapes in the grocery store, No I was in NEED! I made it through with flying colors!!!! Day 2 down!! We need to write letters to these retailers to let us see the boxes perhaps more people would be tempted to quit. Hubby is thinking of it. He is still smoking but I see gears turning in his head. He was complaning about $$ earlier, and I made a point to tell him "well I quit smoking so that should help". :) He is proud of me. That's enough for now. I told him the lozenges were for him too if he should decide. To Cobefan, I've gotten out of my seat more than once automatically going out to the garage for one. Didn't even think about it, just got up and then realized 'oh yeah' and then the oh no with a huge craving and a deep sense of sorrow for my best friend. Don't go cold turkey...be a warm chicken with the rest of us, its much easier! :) Keep it up everyone we can do it! Today

Hello! Today is my quit date too. I've managed to get through this morning, COLD TURKEY! I must be crazy to attempt this. I've quit before in the past due to pregnancy, and then for exercise. As soon as I stop exercising, I start smoking again. I'm just sick of how much money I'm spending on something I hate. I hope a little support from some friends will help me kick the habit. I am looking forward to seeing how others are kicking thier habit.

Nicotine patches !@#$%

Do patches work by releasing nicotine according to your body heat? I'm afraid to try and get to much nicotine(although at this point, the first day of my quit,I'm ok with that :))

How do I quit something I started when I was 15!! HELP!!

Windy: I too feel same way you do about whatever you are feeling ya gotta go have a smoke, and it helps me deal, and has worked for a long time. I'm so mad at that process because I go out and spend a lot of time smoking when there are other things to be done. 10 minuites here and there add up in a days time. I feel like they are making me lazy. Which starts a cycle of self-loathing. Then I go out a little later and do the same again. I've gotten really sick of it, I don't like that feeling, and finally decided to take control of it. I'm sure I will find that old energy soon, but until then at least I'm free of the cycle. I too am so inspired by all who are sharing their stories and words of encouragement. I know you can do it! So if you find a system that works please share.
