Why people slip...

Please God, make it stop! No, not these horrible cravings (well, on second thought...those too), but this incessant banter about "slipping". Let's get on with our quits and quit whining about "slips"

What is Slipping?

I just started a thread called "fear", but I should have looked here first. I agree..."slipping"?! Where did that sweet little term for "it" come from. I'm scared to death of screwing up my quit after 25 days. To read of someone's slip after a year is so demoralizing. Sure, I realize it happens. I think all of us are pained by it, knowing full well what it means. A little tough love IS being supportive. Thanks to all of you! Fear

For the first time in my life, I am embracing fear. I am so scared of lighting up a cigarette. It would mean that after 25 days, I would be lost again. 25 days of hell for nothing and I don't think I could quit again, if I "slipped". This quit does seem to get better, but it is so damned hard. Saturday, I drop down to the 14mg patch. I'm concerned, but failure doesn't seem to be as much of a concern anymore because I'm too damned scared. Like I was too scared to ever try heroin. It's a rational fear, anyway. Now, the idea of smoking is really horrifying. Maybe I sound nutty, but I'm really grateful for the fear. The reason I'm posting this is that maybe this will help you folks in the first week or so when it doesn't seem so horrible to cave in and buy a pack. Eventually, there is relief in that the idea of "slipping" becomes almost unthinkable. By the way, this site has helped a lot. Kudos to "Lady" and the thread that launched a thousand replies! Be afraid....be very afraid. The Courage to Quit

Lady- right on. I started a thread on fear and should have read some of these first. I don't know if I'm all that courageous, but I am too damned scared to screw this quit up by lighting up a cigarette. I had a dream last night where someone offered me a cig ( and believe me, on the patch, these dreams are in digital high definition) and it might as well have been a rattlesnake the way I pulled back. Woke up this morning and thought for the first time in this quit how terrified I am of smoking 14,600 cigs annually again because I "slipped". 14,600-that's a 2ppd smoker and we're not that uncommon. It flips me right out. This fear or courage....whatever it is....is a great thing. I won't say I'm not still having quite a fight. But it's great knowing I'm past the point where buying a pack has any sort of sense or logic to it. Ahhh, deep breath. Thanks to all you. Time Smoking = Harder Quit?

Same here....30 years for me but unless you just started smoking last week, I'd say not to expect an easier ride. But it will be easier than some who have already gotten COPD or worse. Look at it this way, though: you won't have 30 years of constant assault on your heart and lungs and you'll recover a lot quicker from the lesser amount of damage cigs have done. Get it over with now. You can't even use the excuse us older smokers have of how "glamorous" it was to smoke at one time, because now we're no better than heroin junkies. Societal pressure does make it easier....take advantage of it. Coffee?

Coffee is a tough one for me too. I love the flavor of coffee and grind my own dark french roast every day. Yes- it causes cravings (but not so bad that I can't take it), but I refuse to give up everything. I like coffee more than cigarettes. It's ok with me. And now, coffee tastes SO MUCH BETTER!!!! If it causes you too much distress, you must avoid it. I have to avoid friends that smoke, but still talk on the phone to them. They get it. Too bad if they don't. Maybe they'll quit! Having second thoughts

No time is a good time to quit. I was the king of excuses to put it off, so don't think I'm being "preachy" here. Since no time is good, any time is also as good as any other to quit. Just do it and stop trying to put it off; believe me, you'll just have another excuse in 2 months. It's called addiction. Dee- congratulations! I'd say about a week for THOSE. I guess it's the carbon monoxide lingering and all the other crap leaving your body. It's worth it. Hang in there!
