Lung Cancer

I have had scares with my health related to smoking and cancer, and only very recently also. When i was younger, I wouldnt have cared as I thought i was invincible. WHen I was a smoker I buried my head in the sand, as i was going to give up 'one day'. Now i care and I think myself lucky that i have quit. It is because of my health more than anything else, that I hope that i will never smoke again.

People, we live in a whole new world. Read whatever articles you like, less and less kids are taking up smoking and they are smart enough to see what happens (their parents are baby boomers) when people smoke. Therefore, I believe over the next decades there will be a huge decrease in the number of smokers. If more and more older smokers pass on, there will not be as many to "take their place" Oh poor tobacco companies. Add onto this the restrictions and ordinances everywhere. Banned smoking is a normal, everyday thing now. People don't even talk to much about it anymore, it's expected. That's all I wanted to say - carry on proudly with your quits folks. Brenna thanks for the story and the powerful image. Sad and true and it is everywhere. What a sad way to live. You know, until I quit smoking, this story would have meant nothing to me. It would have been another prime example of stuff that happens to other people. As a smoker, if this kind of thing did happen to me I would have thought well...we all die of something anyway. I probably wouldn't have regretted my smoking until the very end. Thanks for sharing this with us. The way we let the addiction control our lives is nothing short of insanity. There is nothing like being free from the enslavement of smoking. I have read so many times on this site about different experiences we have all had with smokers and lung cancer...I just wanted to share mine....It never ceases to amaze me what an extra extra strong addiction this really is.... I live in a very small country town about 30 miles from Dallas. The only real store in the town is a Dollar Store and everyone knows everyone by acquaintance there.... There is a lady who works in there (I've never really known how old she was but she looked very very old because of the many many deep deep wrinkles on her face)and she is always standing out front smoking when I go there.... However, she hasnt been to work for about 3 or 4 months and I ask where she was They informed me she found out she had stage 4 lung cancer..... she had been out having surgery and chemo.. The need for her to work must be a necessity because she is back to work...She has no hair (she wears a ball cap to hid this), she can hardly talk without breathing so hard and she can barely stand up behind the register to ring up customers....Its so very sad. I had to pick up some things from there last night and I pulled into the parking lot and there she was standing outside smoking...she was holding onto a grocery buggy to stand up......My heart ached for her. The girls inside told me she said she was just too tired to fight the withdrawels anymore. I just can't get her out of my mind today... Let's make sure not another one of us gives in to this horrible addiction...
