muscles tight in the back of the neck and throat

I get this the sensation of having a swollen tongue too, also my upper lip feels like it is tingling? My attacks seem to happen constantly, for about 45 mintues unless I am distracted - but my symptoms can change with each one? Is this normal (for being not normal :))

I've actually thought I was having an allergic reaction and have gone to the ER (several times) because I could swear my tongue feels swollen or too big for my mouth only to be told it's most likely anxiety. There were a couple of things that helped me to rule out anything other than anxiety... 1) It always happened at bedtime or upon waking, 2) as soon as I started to do relaxation exercises, my 'symptoms' went away. Still scary at the time... it's amazing what our mind will hold onto and try to convince us of. Anxiety is a liar and a thief... don't believe what it tries to tell you.

Hello! I feel the throat thing too. But dont' worry, it will pass. I had it for a while and then it went away as another symptom took over. It just never seems to end here but i'm trying my best. The throat thing is normal and it sort of feelings like there are knots in ur throat.....hard to swallow. Dont worry girl...thats anxiety!

Hi Ann, What you described is classic symptoms of anxiety. That said, you should still check with a doctor just to be sure. I often get stiff muscles in the back of my neck and shoulders. My throat tightens up, too. I remember reading somewhere that this is a symptom of anxiety and cannot harm you. There is even a medical name for that feeling you get in your throat (I forget what its called - its not important). Its totally harmless, so don't worry about it. Try to do something to help ease the tension in your muscles. A relaxation tape might work for you (if you can't find one, let me know, I have a few on my pc). Brad

Ann, I find myself holding my breath quite a bit. I do it even more when I am trying to go to sleep. Its almost like I am holding it in expectation of another panic attack. Thats why I find taking the slow, deep breaths can help me. A bath will definately help with your neck, I have been taking a book in with me ( a guilty pleasure of mine :)) It helps to takes my focus off the feelings of panic. The first time I had my panic attack was just over a month ago as well. I was driving at the time and though I was going to pass out. I thought I was going to die. I have found this site to be a great help in understanding what my body ( and mind) is going through during the panic. I managed to walk to the shops yesterday thanks to the sessions on this site. I even joked around with the shopkeeper. Up until then I haven't been able to leave my house for the last few weeks without freaking out! Shell

Thanks guys for the replies. When I am not panicking I tell myself it must just be tension, but when the symptoms come I just think its the worse, which probably makes the symptoms worse. I have been having this symptom for about a month now, and when I come to think about it, I have been quite stressed lately. I will try the hot shower/bath and see how it goes. I just really frightens me. I feel like I hold my breath alot too. Does anyone else do this???

Ann, You may want to check with your doctor or clinic to rule out anything medical. Please try and slow down and do something relaxing. Perhaps a long hot shower or bath to ease the tension. Please let us know how it goes, Josie ______________________________ The Panic Center Support Team.

Hi Ann, I also get the tightness in the back of my neck, my throat tightens up making me feel like I can't breath. I try and take some slow, deep breaths (about 10 if you can manage it) to loosen my chest and throat a bit. Your neck might be hurting as your are really tense from the panic. Try and relax your shoulders down slowly and sit as straight as you can. It should help loosen off the tension in your neck. If the posture is too scrunched up it makes it worse. Just make sure your comfortable and try and slow down if you have to get up and do anything. It feels awful but I haven't fainted or anything yet :). Shell

Hi there, I am really scared at the moment. I have long spells of the back of my neck feeling very hard, like all the muscles have tightened right up. This makes my throat feel tight and my head feels like it is going to explode. I get really dizzy and I am so scared it is something really serious. Please help!!!!!
