Ativan et al

For me....Ativan is a great drug. You won't get addicted to taking it once in a while for panic attacks. It calms you down. Sublingual under the tongue works in about 20-30 minutes. It is a temporary fix, and will get you through the panic. In worse case scenarios it calms me down so I can use my skills. However I try to go without them when I know the anxiety or panic is mild. I have used it for 6 years and have never had a panic attack because of it. We are all different. Perhaps your fear of taking the drug caused the panic? I take up to 3mg a day and have for the last 3 months. I can go days without taking them at all....no addiction..... Maximum dose is 10mg per day.according to Dr. Burns. Don't Panic.....You could get addicted from that, but in .5mg or 1mg doses here and there the chances are unlikely.

Well, I don't want to scare you but when I had Ativan once ( 1 mg so it may have been too strong- I'm a small woman), it knocked me into the very worst panic attack I've ever had in my life. I was ready to jump out of a moving car. Now after about 5 minutes of complete and utter terror ( I couldn't feel or move my legs), it knocked me out and I slept for 14 hours. It makes no sense that I responded that way considering I've taken Xanex with no problem (but at a MUCH smaller dose). It was either the dosage or I just can't take Ativan.

Casey, Thank you very much for your insight. I guess I try to use it when there is a severe attack. But for now i'll stick with the normal remedy which is to fight it without any medication. I am just too afraid to get hooked on the pill. Thank you so much.

hi jys, I have been researching this question for you and unfortunately it is kind of a complicated answer. I am not sure how much detail you are looking for. I would suggest that you consult with your doctor or pharmacist for a more detailed explanation. Basically, Ativan, also known as lorazepam, is part of a class of medications called benzodiazepines. These types of medications are thought to help control anxiety by altering the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals in the brain that result in the transmission of nerve impulses. The end result of Ativan is that it provides is fairly fast acting, short-term relief of anxiety. Hope this helps, Casey _____________________________ The Panic Center Support Team Edited on 1/26/2005 @ 10:21:23 AM by The Support Team

What does ativan do to a person with anxiety? All I know is that it calms you down, however, does it really help chemicals in your brain to act normal? or, it's just a VERY temporary fix?
