Has anyone had experience with Adderal XR? I have read that it is supposed to be really good to help prevent panic attacks.

Mel, My mom had a bad reaction with effexor, so we tried to stay away from that. As far as BuSpar taking 4 weeks, I dont know if I can wait that long! I had a panic attack last night driving home from a friends house on my moped (very scary). That is the 5th one i have had in the past week. I don't know if the combination of quiting paxil and not being on a working medicine right now has caused all those panic attacks, but its a lot more than my normle once a week. I am going to my cousins house in 3 days for a few days, hopefully I will be able to relax and have fun there. The thing that worries me the most is starting school without a sollution. I just dont know what I will do if I have to start school with this horrible condition. Thanks, Casey

Buspar can help with generalised anxiety, but its highly unlikely to prevent panic attacks. It can be used to augment SSRIs/SRNIs for panic -but on its own is unlikely to be helpful. It also takes around 4 weeks before you'll feel any reduction in anxiety. I feel striongly that if my doctor had treated the panic early it would not have escalted and I wouldn't have had to deal with it for 13 years! If your doctor is reluctant to prescribe benzodiazapine long-term (I think for some people with panic disorder this is they only route they will find actually benefits them -but, again everyone is so different) has he or she thought of an SNRI such as effexor? It has been used alongside buspar in some cases -it's believed to help with some of the side effects - but we've no randomised controlled trials -so its anecdotal evidence only. There also comes a point when a change of doctor must also be considered! Hope you get the help you need Mel

My name is Casey (male) and I am 15. I have had panic attacks for about 3 monthes now. In the past I have had severe depression but I am definatly past that now. For the depression, we tried almost ever SSRI there was. Most didn't work (Prozac, Nortriptaline) and some made me sick (Zoloft, Paxil). On Wednesday, I saw my Dr. again (a nurse practioner (sp?)) to report that the latest medicine, Paxil, was not working. Seeing I have had some problems in my past with drugs, they are very hesitant to but me on any benzodizapines. They put me on BuSpar 5 mg. twice a day. Since wednessday, I have been taking a Paxil 12.5 CR every other day (Wed. and Fri.) and 1 5mg. Buspar everyday to curb any withdrawl from the Paxil (although I was only on it for about a month. Since Wednessday night, I have had 4 panic attacks, including 2 today, 1 lasting about 30 minutes. So my question is this: What now? Do you agree that the benzodizapines aren't right for me? I havent touched any drugs since Febuary and have no desire to anymore. Are there any others that we have overlooked? I don't want a mistake from my past get in the way of any treatment for this huge problem. School starts on August 17th, and the idea of still having a panic attack a week at school scares me to death. So please, if anyone has any ideas/advice, let me hear them.
