Hi Shari,

There are so many ways we all try to form an understanding of the world, and why we're here. Even the arts are ways of expressing ourselves. I chose visual art and drama in my senior studies at high school and loved learning about the different phases of art and theatre. The one I find most ironic is dada-ism (a modernist art era in the early 20th century), how artists rejected the beliefs of previous eras and began creating exhibitions with useless and meaningless objects. One artist turned a urinal on it's side and placed it in the middle of his exhibition. They referred to themselves as "anti-artists" but their efforts ended up making dada one of the most popular art movements of the 20th century!
I know you'll understand the reference I'm trying to make here.

Stereotypes, like panic attacks, are something that's evolved in us, so we can easily judge whether or not someone is 'safe'. Or maybe it's how we work out where we stand in the pecking order. That's how I like to think of it. These principles worked very well for us in the past, but aren't as necessary for us now.

Hi Kaitie,

It's hard to find a denomination that a person will agree with 100%, because we are all individuals.  They are not custom made to accommodate each person.  I find that I've had to go to places where I believed most of their doctrine and the stuff I wasn't sure of or didn't agree with, I set it on the shelf, so to speak.  Just agreed to disagree and ponder it for a later time or just leave it on the shelf.  I have friends, who won't go to church at all, because that can't agree 100% with any denomination.  The problem I have is, that all religion, is man's interpretation of God and His Word.  Since humans make mistakes and are imperfect, God gets blamed for the actions of His people, church or religious groups.  I know a family who are atheists, specifically, because their church turned their back on them in a time of need.  It was the action of people not God.  Another problem I have is, stereotypes.  Not all Christians are judgmental and do not shun homosexuals or people with mental illnesses. A whole group should not be judged on the basis of one or a few bad apples in the bunch.  There are always going to be bad people in every race, every religion, etc.  I just try to peacefully coexist.  Even if I don't agree, I can still be kind.

Hi Shari,

That's the main reason I've tried to distance myself from religion itself, as in I try not to conform to a certain religion. I feel some religions, or just a small percentage within those religions, expect others to adapt themselves to the religion, not the religion to their individual lives. It's almost all or nothing. I also feel that those who don't conform are oppressed and some issues, such as mental illness and homosexuality, are swept under the carpet.

Exactly, I thought believing in God's existence was meant to be a way of uniting everyone, not to cause segregation and prejudice.

Aww thank you! You're so lovely Shari

Hi Kaitie,

I agree, no matter what religion, or non religion, as human beings we all deserve respect and dignity.  There are some Christians who are judgmental who should be more Christ-like in being kind to others.  I've been to churches where, if you're not born into the church, you are not accepted.  Does that not defeat the purpose of being a Christian, and accepting others, in the first place?  I cannot understand it.  Also, the sad war between the Catholics and Protestants in Ireland, is beyond comprehension to me. They both worship God, how is it possible to want to be "right" instead of live the principles in peace. Again, I don't get it.  It would be like me being a Presbyterian and hating a Methodist, it makes no sense.  We need to be kind and show love and if we don't agree, we can still be kind and show love.  You don't have to hate, ridicule or mock someone else's beliefs.  Well, off my soap box.

I think you're a great person Kaitie and you're really smart and I learn a lot from your posts.  Your presence on this site has made it even more valuable.

Shari, this site really is a great place. Religion can at times cause drifts within our society which I don't entirely understand. We all have our spiritual beliefs for the same reasons, and some are even based on the same principles. When did it become less about finding a purpose and more about being right? Wow, that really hit me hard. I'm definitely guilty of that. .

Hugs, it really is a delicate balance. I realised that a couple of days ago, I lifted a water drum which is a bit less than half my weight. Explains the shoulder and back pain, I must've pulled a muscle or three! Haha. I'm almost looking forward to the dentist though, having swollen cheeks and a painful jaw might be a thing of the past for me soon.
Look after yourself too Hugs!

Kt,
All the muscles are connected up around the neck and head area, so it's a delicate balance isn't it?  This would explain the acute attack I had lately

Hi Kaitie

It's true that spirituality can mean different things to different people.  I like the Buddhist philosophy of kindness, peace, nature and animals.  When I was younger, my best friend's were atheists.  I've had close Mormon friends and I've dated a Jewish friend in the past as well.  I like this site, because we all are accepted for who we are.  We are not judged.  We get along and we can share our ideas in a safe environment.  We are all equal and we all have value.

Hi Ashley and Shari,

Those symptoms sound very familiar. Lately my jaw has been giving me a lot of trouble, my bruxism has been bad. My cheekbones are sore, my face is swollen and I had terrible neck and shoulder pain yesterday. I'm seeing my dentist next Tuesday, I've made the appointment for 4pm as I tend to feel at my best in the afternoon.

I have heard of the S.M.A.R.T goals before, on a few leadership camps I've done with Guides and school. They really help :)

I've been having trouble with my digestive system for the past year, so I eat lots of light, healthy foods. Shari, when I had my anorexia, my dietician told me to eat healthily so I can gain weight because anorexics tend to compensate if they eat something unhealthy by exercising more, or eating less later. Before I started seeing her, I never realised I did this, so for years we were trying "fattening" foods and weren't getting anywhere.

The four areas you mentioned sound right Shari. For different people they mean different things, but for all of us, if we're lacking in one of those general areas, we won't be balanced. Even as an atheist, spirituality still has meaning for me. I love the Buddhist philosophy, and believe in Darwin's theory of evolution. It's not so much I don't have any spiritual beliefs, but more of a compilation of various things that have meaning to me, and I can apply through my own experiences.

Thanks Ashley!

I bought healthy food and drinks at the grocery store.  I know it's not one of my 3 current goals, but I have been eating healthier for about a year now.  You can still eat too much healthy food and gain weight though :-(  Also, I've been in a routine before with exercise, so I just have to not fall back into old lazy habits.  I have motivation, because of wanting to get rid of back pain.  I have to keep that in mind when I'm well and want to skip it sometimes.  I'm going to post notes around my house:  "Spiritual, mental, physical, social.  Those would remind me that I need to keep up with those things to have a balanced and fulfilled life. Will keep you updated; this site is my accountability.  I know I can do it.  Are there any other areas, other than the 4 mentioned above, that we need to have to live a balanced and happy life?  I'm not sure if I have them right or not.  Thanks.

Shari
