Welcome Alpraz4!

Thank you for posting. You are not alone in this. Congrats on getting started. Any thinking you can do towards cutting back or quitting is a step in the right direction.

You ask a great question. Try doing a keyword search through the forums, I'm sure there are tons of great suggestions on there. I also recommend trying to find alternative mood boosters or distractions from alcohol. Any form of exercise can help greatly. Non alcoholic tasty and/or healthy beverages. Hobbies or activities that you enjoy or might enjoy. I think one of the toughest parts of quitting is figuring our how you want to spend your time when you're not drinking. If you can figure that out you will be on your way to success. My last suggestion, try delaying when you have a craving. Sometimes delaying allows you to get past the craving or it at least slows you down a bit.

What is motivated you to make this change?

Take care,

Ashley

Hi everyone.
I am glad I have found this website. So far it has been somewhat helpful in managing my heavy drinking.
My addiction medicine doctor has just recently put me on Topamax (Topiramate) to help with cravings to alcohol. Anyone tried this and had success? I am starting on the lowest dose of 12.5mg at bedtime for 2 weeks then going up to 25mg at bedtime. I am currently experiencing some dizziness with it. I started Monday and it hasn't really helped yet 🤔
Does anyone have a trick with triggers they can tell me? I am caught in a loop right now with cravings /triggers then giving in. I try to quit and relapse after. Its just been an ongoing frustrating cycle 😤
Help is very much appreciated! 😊 ❤️

Alpraz,

I sobered up few years ago using the 12 steps of AA. What you are talking about is what we in AA call it as peculiar mental twist. Peculiar because it will only make sense to us. We succumb to those thoughts and then we also have something physically happen. We crave more alcohol after we take one or two drinks. We have to have an attitude shift. Visit AA.org and read the chapter on Alcoholism in the book Alcoholics Anonymous. I also have some notes captured and loaded them at: https://tinyurl.com/firststepAA
