Thank you so much.  I found a hobby I could do while watching TV - sculpting polymer clay.  Will keep my hands busy.

I think the distraction is key to sobriety. Just sitting there and feeling bored does not help.

Congratulations for your first steps!

Thank you so much High Tower.  I have found using distractions have helped me these past 3 days.  Walking, reading, working on projects, planning future projects, etc. I do feel better, just hope I can keep it up!

Welcome Honu

You did good, glad to hear of positives as they can be very motivating. Focus on what works for you and don't be afraid to revaluate your goals as you journey on. Keeping things positive should help you reach those goals also.

Reading through this forum helped me learn more about triggers, setbacks and such. The information here can help us learn from what doesn't work and get back on track.

Good luck Honu

Thank you so much.  I have been thinking about the triggers - boredom and stress are the 2 main ones.  I cancelled an activity with friends for Saturday, because I am used to drinking around them.  I used the day to engage in self care activities such as walking, reading and meditating.  Went to a place where I am used to drinking with my husband, but committed to only having 2 glasses of wine there and was able to do it.

Welcome Honu,

It is a good goal to cut down. I was drinking 2 liters of wine per day and I realized I just could not cut down. The habit was too imbricated in me after all those years. I had to finish the bottle and yes, just like you I sat in front of the computer isolating myself, refusing  invitation to go out because I did not want to drink and drive.

Specialists say it takes 3 months to change a habit. Personally, I have decided to reevaluate in 3-4 months and see if I can go back to be a "normal" drinker. It will be one month tomorrow and I can only see the advantages. I keep busy. Yesterday, I felt bored and I had the feeling of having a few drinks. I then remembered that when I was drinking, I was still bored after I had those two bottles of wine.

Did you think about what trigger your feeling to open the first bottle? Using the log could maybe help you, writing down your feelings when you feel like having this first drink.

This site is very helpful. The community is very encouraging. Keep coming. You might find some interesting insights to relate to.

I'm new to this group. I've tried stopping drinking several times.  I think the longest I have made it is 5 days.  The only thing I drink is Chardonnay and some days that may be 2.5 bottles.  It's starting to kill my waistline, and I wind up in front of the TV or computer instead of doing things that are more positive and fun.  I really love Chardonnay and would hate to give it up completely.  My goal would be a couple glasses on Friday and Saturday night, but I don't know how I could leave a half empty bottle alone.
